A PREDATORY robot devised by British scientists could generate its own energy by catching and digesting flies.
Called EcoBot II, the creation is part of a drive to make “forget and release” robots that could be deployed into dangerous and inhospitable areas.
We’re still learning from nature, John. As a child on the damp and gloomy New England coast, I collected cactus and succulents — including the forbidding Stapelia. Forbidden by my mom, once it blossomed.
Stapelias mostly frequent hot dry places ignored by intelligent critters like bees and evolved emitting the stench of rotten meat to attract flies to accomodate cross-pollination. It had to take someone from the equally sunny shores of Scotland to come up with this idea.
