Carmel — A dozen women who posed in the buff to raise money for Carmel-by-the- Sea’s fire station thought their efforts would be welcomed, with a chuckle, by this cash-strapped city.

But much to their surprise, the more than $40,000 raised by the Carmel Fire Belles’ fund-raising calendar has been sharply rejected by city officials who say the cash is too hot to handle. Accepting it, they say, could offend sensibilities and expose the city to costly sexual harassment lawsuits.

In our area the ladies just have fish frys for the VFD. The guys are selling bottled water and the bankers hand out free calendars. Sounds like you folks in California do it a little bit differently.

I think the city did the right thing by rejecting the money. Some things are more important than money … in the case, government should be professional and there is value in keeping government services professional.

If those ladies want to pose for some magazine, fine. Let’s not have government be a circus.

Sex sells. Over and over and over again. It is a sad commentary on our culture when the only way to motivate people is by titillating their testosterone. And no doubt, some low-life lawyer would probably sue to make an easy buck.
