This just helps to show the absurdity of our society’s ever shifting definition of “cruel and unusual punishment.” Along with other reinterpretations of laws that have not changed.
If public opinion changes over time, then change the law; but if it was Constitutional 200 years ago, and absent any subsequent amendments to the Constitution, it should be equally Constitutional now.
There are some very mentally disturbed inmates in the prison system that’s receiving minimal or no treatment. There’s no where else to put them. I don’t know about this case, but I do know the states regularly releases very disturbed individuals back into society without a net or treatment options. Very soon will not be able to afford to keep sending petty drug offenders to prisons. Now we just dump inmates out on early parole to make room for the latest batch.

I’ve got a better idea:
Instead of a life sentence, give him a death sentence and instead of wasting millions of dollars for that death sentence, just take him a remote location and put a bullet through the head. Clean, cheaper, and effective. Let’s save even more money and get a high powered rifle and line up the to-be-executed and create a death row and one bullet through one and kills the rest in one shot.

If I was facing life in prison, I’d surly be thinking about a sex change operation. Lights out in a woman’s prison has to be more fun than lights out with the men.
