Since this video has been played over 6.5 million times on YouTube, you may have seen it already. But if you haven’t, this guy, playing in his bedroom, is as good as any big-time rock guitarist. And he’s playing a classical music piece!

  1. Floyd says:

    One word: WoW!

If this guy isn’t a one trick pony, he should have a future. Obviously he’s a fan of ELO and Queen as I hear both influences in his playing.

  2. Manitoban says:

Pachabel is one of my favorite composers.

I love his take on one of his most famous tunes

  3. sw0rdfish says:

For the record, he didn’t write this version of the song… he’s just learned it and played it… still impressive… but he’s no genius composer.

  4. Dave M. says:

I don’t know, I just went to youtube.com to find the video so I could see what it’s commenters had to say. I found two other versions of the “exact” same song being played by other people. At least it looks like it could be other people.

    You all be the judge

  5. SN says:

Thanks Dave M. I kind of thought he was just play-syncing to the music. That sort of proves it.

Not that it would be impossible for a kid to play that piece. Steve Vai started playing for Zappa when he was 16 . It’s just that the production, aka, the mix of the alleged guitar with the background song is just too professional. And when you add in that second video, it all starts to make sense.

I’m assuming the music was by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I couldn’t find that particular song on allofmp3 though. Anyone else have it?

  6. dave says:

That isn’t even the “Original” piece. JerryC prepared that peice (Canon in D) in a rock style version http://www.jerryc.tw he’s from Taiwan and he’s got plenty more where that came from.

  7. Uncle Dave says:

I just checked out the others like Dave M did. They’re played differently, although one seems to use the same backing track as this guy. If you watch carefully, I can’t find a place where he’s off a fraction of a second. The notes are plucked exactly when you hear them. There are also a few missed notes which makes me think if it is fake, it isn’t the recording of a known artist or group. And if it is fake, the guy is so fast at playing ‘fakely’ that I bet he can really play exceptionally well. In other words, I would be amazed if it’s a fake.

  8. SN says:

I found JerryC’s version! Check it out yourself! Today I’ll take both and mix them into one file (one on the left and one on the right) so we can compare them directly.

  9. Uncle Dave says:

“the mix of the alleged guitar with the background song is just too professional”

SN, you haven’t played with any of the audio software that comes with a Mac. Professional quality in your bedroom is the norm now a days.

  10. Uncle Dave says:

SN, looking forward to your test. To me, JerryC’s playing is sloppy while this guy’s is very crisp and precise. Much faster playing with more difficult fingering. Very diffferent styles.

  11. Pierre says:

Another impressive classic cover is a guitar duo of by Children of Bodom.
I’m not a fan of heavy metal, but judging by the quality of playing here, maybe I’m missing something.

  12. Rich says:

This guy is really good. But, I think it’s a piece by Yngwie Malmsteen. If you want to hear argueably the best guitar pieces ever, check him out.

  13. SN says:

Ok, here it is! The YouTube guy is on the left channel while JerryC is on the right. They are DIFFERENT. Thus, the YouTube guy is clearly not play-syncing to the JerryC track. Whether he’s play-syncing to a different version is a different matter.

  14. Whatever the case it’s good to see kids taking an interest in classical music.

  15. Tom says:

This version sounds a little better than jerry c’s version, his version is a little more sloppy.

  16. Dave M. says:

I agree with Uncle Dave, I heard a few places where it sounded like there was a mistake. It’s hard to tell when you haven’t really heard the piece before. Sure, I’ve heard the Canon before, just not a “rock” version. 🙂

I can’t say for sure one way or the other with the original video. If he is faking the moves, he’s doing a fantastic job. If he’s really playing it, he’s also doing a fantastic job. Either way, he’s got talent!

  17. Andy says:

I’m not sure whats so impressive about it other than he made a video. I know a lot of guitar players who could do that.

  18. David H says:

The same guy, same song, different take.
Clearly not the same audio here.. Still pretty good, but a lot of misses.
If it is not him playing what we hear in the first video, he sure fools me.. 🙂

  19. Uncle Dave says:

One more thing: If you go to this JerryC fan website, you’ll find links to dozens of others doing covers of the song. FunTwo’s is third.

And as for the backing track, go to JerryC’s website. Under lessons you can download it.

  20. admiral ackbar says:

Why can’t anyone accept that people do have talent and everything in the world isnt photoshopped or overlayed? I think all of your blogs are just someone elses content with your name on it, what do you think of that?

  21. SN says:

“Why can’t anyone accept that people do have talent and everything in the world isnt photoshopped or overlayed?”

The opposite of being skeptical is being gullible. I guess we know what side of the fence you’re on!

  22. Dave M. says:

“Why can’t anyone accept that people do have talent and everything in the world isnt photoshopped or overlayed?”
Because there are so many fakes out there it’s hard to tell the real stuff from the fakes.

I said when I first posted my concerns that I wasn’t sure. However, when you see three videos all using the “exact” same music, it’s hard to think anything other than fake.

  23. koo says:

I still think this dudes is the best.

  24. ryan says:

the video is definitely not fake. however, it does not take as much skill as everyone may think. as a 17 year old guitarist myself who has played for four years, I can safely say that I can play that flawlessly within a week. As part of the local guitar club, there are many teenagers that can play just as well as that kid. as long as you have the passion and the time…you can do anything.

  25. sam says:

I’m going to chime in to agree with Ryan. Well performed. I was much less impressed when I discovered it was a cover. Any seasoned guitarist can play that. More than anything I think kids are impressed with virtuoso style solos than anything in particular about this kid. Maybe the masses will start favoring metal again.

  26. Miguel says:

Well, I don’t care what everyone else says. I say I’m impressed, and this made my day! Canon was the first music I listened to when I learnt my dad died, 10 years ago, and this music, played in such a joyous manner, has a special meaning to me! Keep bringing the good stuff, John!

  27. Jack says:

    Sam,

If you can learn it in a week, then post your version here in a week.

  28. Geoff says:

I am so ripping the audio from this. Excellent.

  29. Mr. H. Fusion says:

Either this guy is playing or doing an incredible sync. I caught two mistakes on one listen so I think it is genuine. No question, the guy is good.
