One News – Auckland, New Zealand – August 26, 2006:

The parents of 17-year-old Liam Ashley, who was beaten to death en route to prison, say they were the ones who charged him with theft.

Ashley was found badly beaten in the back of a Chubb Security van on Thursday night. Although he was revived by paramedics at the scene, he died on Friday.

Ashley’s family say his parents wanted to teach him a lesson about the consequences of breaking the law. He had taken his mother’s car without permission so they had him charged him with theft.

On Thursday Ashley appeared at the North Shore District Court. The judge offered him bail but his parents chose to send him to prison as a deterrent.

But on the trip to Auckland Central Remand prison, he was believed to have been strangled and assaulted by two others in the van.

Sounds like junior’s mouth wrote a check his ass couldn’t cash.

Watch for the parents to sue.

  2. Richard says:

Ouch…. Just imagine the guilt of the parents.

  3. astro says:

A lot of love in this family… This is a recurring problem in America, give the responsibility of teaching your kids to society. Not sure if it’s a good approach.

  4. Improbus says:

Tough love in indeed. Give that boy a Darwin Award.

  5. gamabunta says:

    @ astro

I would agree with you had this actually took place in the U.S.

In your rush to attack the “problems in America” you failed to realize this incident took place in Auckland, New Zealand!

  6. gquaglia says:

I agree with #1. This kid was probably an out of control problem case. He learned the lesson of life the hard way.

  7. Joao says:

    #6 He learned nothing, he’s dead…

  8. SN says:

“This kid was probably an out of control problem case.”

I agree. And I’m guessing that the kid mouthed off to the other criminals in the bus transporting him. That’s why they attacked him.

  9. SN says:

    He learned nothing, he’s dead…

He learned something as those guys were beating on his ass.

  10. philthy says:

i’ve been in the Auckland holding cells when I was a 15 year old. It was a big trip for me, hanging out with the big time crims. I had to sleep on a hard bench in a cell with 1 other convict. they even took the shoelaces out of my boots. I was an out of control problem case back then. Now I stay at home and play with OpenSource Software.

  11. Bryan says:

See, this is what happens when you don’t beat your kids.

  12. BB says:

The lesson is not to trust the police.

  13. Me says:

Its interesting that it was a private security firm’s van hauling the kid.

Makes you wonder about the cost savings of privatization….

  14. gquaglia says:

The lesson is not to trust the police.

Wrong, private security firm did the transport, not the police. Please read before you spout out your anti establishment comments.

  16. Dan says:

The lesson is not to trust the gov. to raise your kids for you.

  17. Sladen says:

The parents can share the Darwin award. Definite failure to reproduce. Apparently they thought prison works the way it is supposed to in 50′s movies. Too bad they hadn’t watched TV since then…

  18. Sounds the Alarm says:

    #1

James – I take it that the expectation in “James’ jail” is you can kill who ever you want & its the dead guy’s fault?

Damn right they should sue & what ever cop was on the xport detail should be fired.

  19. James Hill says:

I’m not saying it’s a great thing that happened, I’m stating what happened.

It’s a shame the kid died…. those guys were probably just trying to knock some sense into him.

  20. I agree with Bryan. Although it was — I think — tounge-in-cheek, children have no fear anymore. They aren’t disciplined at home and see no consequences to their actions. I remember behaving due to fear of the punishment I would get from my parents. Now I see kids at the mall swearing at their mothers.

However, this may not be one of those cases. I find it hard to believe this family wasn’t very disciplinary and then one day decided to have their son arrested.

Did he provoke the beating? Probably
Did he deserve to die? Not at all.
