“Annie Leibovitz is tired and nursing a cold, and she’ s just flown back to New York on the red-eye from Los Angeles, where she spent two days shooting Angelina Jolie for Vogue….”
I guess there are no other magazines available to feature stuff like art, photography, pop issues or families and children. Newsweek has to push Afghanistan off the cover in the states to feature this.
Meanwhile the foreign issues note, Five years after the Afghan invasion, the Taliban are fighting back hard, carving out a sanctuary where they—and Al Qaeda’s leaders—can operate freely.
I guess Newsweek figures what you don’t know can’t hurt you. Just shut up and look at the pretty pictures of Angelina’s baby.
But of course our media could suck because we’re so ignorant!

(Second try as my previous lost all the quotes I’d referenced. A “preview” feature would be really nice!)

Easiest way to stop terrorism…
Sorry but there is no ‘easy’ way, nor is there any short way. Look up the “Malaysian Emergency”, for example. A State of Emergency was declared in 1948 after the local Communists decided that violence was the only way to achieve their aims. That SoE was lifted in 1960, but a peace treaty wasn’t signed until 1989. 41 years, think about that. But it worked, in the end.
Or how about the Troubles in Northern Ireland? That lasted almost 30 years, and could still be dicey.
Of course, the whole of the middle east was fucked around by the Europeans.
Yes, it is always the fault of the Europeans, isn’t it? NO ONE ELSE, of any race or nationality ever tried to exploit their people, or engaged in foreign adventures until those pesky Europeans came along. Yeah, right.
innocents die every day by those who seek power, wield power or exploit power.
And that goes for terrorists too. You think they don’t “seek power, wield power or exploit power”?
“The gun has never solved a problem. It never will.”
You think maybe you could convince bin Laden, Hamas, Hezbollah, of that very pertinent observation?
Yes, I try to stay an informed and cynical citizen
Named, now this I can agree with. But, I hope that you can agree it’s a damn tough job keeping informed.

Canada enacted a very different set of foreign policy goals following the Korean War. The impressive thing is that fighting a war with weapons but diplomacy was the key.
Foreign policy goals can’t stay static in a changing world.
Pedantic note: I think you left a ‘no’ out of that second sentence. But this too, I can agree (partly) with.
There was an author, name forgotten, who said something like “Violence is the last resort of the incompetent because they are incompetent. Consequently, when they do use it, they have to use too much. The competent know when violence is required.”
Yes, diplomacy may be the key, but a wise person keeps ALL options open.
Britain gave up land through force in almost every case.
Citations please. I’d like to check your sources out for myself.
The Middle East had great cities and civilizations.
Yes, they did. Now, did these cities decline because of European influence, or before?
I recommend “Guns, Germs & Steel” by Jared Diamond. It’s a very interesting read. I don’t agree with all of his conclusions, but it will make you think.

41 – You bothered to try to answer 31? It’s no use trying to impart 12 years of school to include history, political science, social studies and general common sense in a couple of paragraphs to someone who obviously hasn’t paid attention in school at all. The Newsweek cover is a reflection of that general lack of knowledge – not intelligence, there’s plenty of that. It’s the decline of education in favor of entertainment. Dude at 31 has an opinion, just not an informed one.
