The Village Voice: Power Plays — Cripes. What is wrong with our government institutions? These guys on Viagra? What are they thinking?

As easy targets go, nothing beats sex offenders. So State Comptroller Alan Hevesi hit the jackpot on Sunday, when he revealed that 198 of New York State’s Level 3 (or high-risk) sex offenders are getting Viagra through Medicaid. Giving erection-inducing meds to people who may have sexually assaulted someone seems, well, dumb

  1. Peter says:

    Nuts. Pure craziness.

Quick question: What’s your take on the whole health care insurance covering the cost of Viagra but not birth control?

Somehow, this also seems out of whack. So the govt. and private sectors both have messed up priorities……

(Of course, some might say that Viagra covered under health care is a-okay, since in there eyes it simply furthers god’s work of procreation – setting aside the fact that Viagra is really a recreational job. The same nut jobs might further argue that birth control hinders god’s work – forgetting that it also seriously helps with family planning and preventing unwanted pregnancies. Such nuts would ask who is to decide when you are to have kids. If you get pregnant, it must be god’s will. But if it is gods place to judge, then whose to judge who should have access to Viagra?)

  2. Jägermeister says:

Next… Government agency offers free weapons training to registered gang members.

  3. TJGeezer says:

Make that free weapons for gang members, not training.

  4. tallwookie says:

How about appointments to bank president for known mobsters?

Or free drugs to people who have been busted for selling em?

  5. Esih says:

From May 23, 2005 Why is it news now?

  6. Curmudgen says:

I do not believe medicaid will pay for erection-inducing meds in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. If I’m wrong mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

  7. huskergrrl says:

I can’t believe this is still going on. This was a relatively big story a few years ago and legislators were vowing to put an end to it. Guess there were no kickbacks for passing this type of legislation.

  8. RR1 says:

Duh, there are legit medical uses for Viagra. The woody is only a side effect that was discovered during its normal use.

  9. Freddie Farkel says:

Do convicted sex offenders not get married and have wives? Do sex offenders not have erection problems as they get older? Would salt peter pills be paid for by Medicare for sex offenders?

Just a few questions to go against the grain.

  10. Awake says:

Back in 2005 most states outlawed providing Viagra to sex offenders. I looked it up on ‘the Google’.
Sounds like someone got their Medicare enrollment form this week., and studied the Drug Formulary (list of covered drugs).

  11. tallwookie says:

yeah i’m going to agree w/ both #7 and #8… there are legimate uses for viagra other than erectile dysfunction (trucker crack anyone?) but this is a big fubar for those senators/legislators that are from that area…

  12. Neal says:

Is it being suggested that giving Viagara to sex offenders makes them more likely to sex offend?

If this is the case, it shows a worrying misunderstanding of how viagara works. How many of you have actually used it?

Seems to me that everyone thinks what happens is you take a viagara and half an hour later you have a flagpole in your pants and an uncrontrollable urge to put it somewhere.

It does not work like that. Except in adult comics like “Viz”, perhaps.

  13. Charles says:

Being a sex a sex offender has little too do with getting a woodie or not..

  14. hamgrl says:

So we’ll spend the money to help them get hard ons but not to keep them locked up…BRAVO AMERICA….and so many people wonder why others think our country has become so effed up….

  15. ChrisMac says:

As much as i hate to say this out loud..

most chicks i know fly off the handle way before i do…

that, in itself, should say way more about me.. than “the chicks i know”
    or war

but.. you can send all hatemail to…
