There is a limited number of things in the world that you can say about "area man". That said, the video made me laugh. It's reminiscent of a couple of British TV shows that spoofed TV new in the early nineties - "The Day Today" and "Brass Eye", starring the contraversial Chris Morris. These got a little contraversial when "Brass Eye" did an entire episode spoofing what it saw as the media hype over paedophilia. The Onion seems to me to have been running out of ideas lately.
