When Americans look like this, then the big corporations will be happy
150,000 US Layoffs for IBM? — The way this article is written it sounds like IBM may as well close up shop. I would be seriously surprised if this happened in this manner.
LEAN is about offshoring and outsourcing at a rate never seen before at IBM. For two years Big Blue has been ramping up its operations in India and China with what I have been told is the ultimate goal of laying off at least one American worker for every overseas hire. The BIG PLAN is to continue until at least half of Global Services, or about 150,000 workers, have been cut from the U.S. division. Last week’s LEAN meetings were quite specifically to find and identify common and repetitive work now being done that could be automated or moved offshore…

“You are redundant!”
“You are fired!”
I just thought I would say it here first.
Next time you hear it you won’t act surprised.
#20 – And the market conditions of 1929 are currently relevant?
HAHAHA that pic…]
What can Brown do for you?
I worked for IBM for 5 years and got the hell out last year after they laid off 15,000 jobs in Europe. Everyone I spoke to during my time there said the outsourcing process to India and China was a joke and jobs just get dumped there and left to fester without any handover.
Customer satisfaction isn’t a priority in Global Services – groups of people just get moved from project to project to patch up the problems. The company’s top-heavy with highly paid managers working from home but there’s no one on the ground to actually do any work.
Yup, it’s mean and stupid.
Say, does anyone know if any good code has ever come out of India?
No offense, my fellow Americans, but you need to learn how to compete and how to actually deliver value for what you are paid. Sorry, Dvorak, Dobbs, etc, if others can produce better results for less money, it’s quite natural to outsource, offshore and whatever you want to call it. It is the foundation of the capitalism: free flow of money, labor and resources. Fight as much as you wish, but the alternatives are artificial and unnatural.
26,
WE know how…
Its when a company is started to supply a service, THAt the managers get paid 10 times what the employees get paid, THATS hurting us.
Take you car to a Mechanic shop, like toyota, GM, and soforth.
You are charged $60+ per hour, for 1 person to work on your car. The PERSON thats working MIGHT be getting $15-20, the REST goes to the corp. Even if you do an itemized Priceing of the billing, the worker, the Extra paper work…THOSE ont he top are taking 1/2 the price. And they are getting this for ALL the cars being worked ON, 10-20 cars at a time.
And the BIG corps dont REALLY know what it costs to do ANYTHING, unless they ask a company that WILL do the business FOR THEM.

IBM has competitors?

I doubt you’ll ever look like that, grungy and homeless yes, but skinny no.
I worked at IBM for 18 years and left in 1998 when it started to be MBA’d to death. I watched them downsize, rightsize, opti-size and now, capsize.
I think this may happen. I got out of a temp job that was in the process of off shoring its human resources dept to this ibm call center. The call center is in manila. We were picked up to do the over flow calls for the call center because they weren’t ready for payroll and taxes questions. They told us that we only had 2 months and that was no guarantee it would last that long. It was very depressing. I wish i could get a real job. I thought going to college and getting a degree would make life easier. Guess not.
I wish that all conservatives would spend a year or two in a religiously conservative, low-tax, low-regulation, no-safety net, no minimum wage country before they keep persuing that vision for America.
I have and that country was Pakistan. It’s a consevative’s fantasy dream land —
For instance, if you were a businessman and you want to pay your employees ten cents an hour! Do it!
If somebody injured themselves in your store or usuing your product — tell them it ws their own damn stupidity that got them injured!.
You wan’t to build something? Just build it! How you want, anywhere you wiant without any pesky building codes or environmental studies. Just build it! If someone trips and breaks their head open on the poorly built concrete steps, tell them to be more careful next time! Since there is no health safeynet — your bad steps just crippled the only wage earner in their family. That’s the price of freedom!
Of course, if YOU are the one who gets skewered through the eye by a piece of rebar sticking out somewhere, that’s your damn bad luck.
#32 – I would set up a company with better benefits to attract the best workers. I’ll have the best product. No one will buy the dangerous stuff.
People vote with their wallet. My competion goes out of business.
