I guess we are entering that time of the year where terrorist threats increase, especially coming closer to the date of the London bombings from two years ago. The car was found near Piccadilly Circus Tube Station. There’s currently quite a traffic jam (as of 10 am GMT) in central London due to this situation.

Car bomb found and defused in Central London – TimesOnline.co.uk: Police defused a “potentially viable explosive device” in a car in Central London in the early hours of this morning, after what appeared to be an attempted terrorist attack against a nightclub in the heart of the capital.

Witnesses said that the vehicle contained two gas canisters and nails were on the floor of the boot. They added that the car had been driven into a series of bins outside a nightclub in the area called Tiger Tiger.

Police this morning cordoned off a number of entrances and exits to Piccadilly Circus Tube Station, which was then closed for safety reasons by Transport for London. The station is set to remain closed for much of the morning, along with major roads all around the area including Wardour Street and Shaftesbury Avenue.

News agencies report that the bomb was neutralised in a controlled explosion.

Update!: according to CBS news, somebody posted a message in a Jihadist website, hours before the bomb incident, saying: “Today I say: Rejoice, by Allah, London shall be bombed”. They also indicate that intelligence sources seemed to express surprise at the discovery of the device, suggesting there had been “no warning, no intel, no smell” as a prelude to the plot, which reportedly has Britain’s domestic intelligence agency “very, very worried”.

Update 2!: There are reports of a second car that was also filled with explosives.

  1. Jägermeister says:

The Brits are used to this shit. IRA used car bombs quite often.

  2. Chaya says:

Travel advisory – Don’t go to London this summer!!

  3. Peter Rodwell says:

Don’t go to London this summer!!

Over-reaction – your chances of falling victim to a terrorist attack in London are minimal. I say this as a survivor of the IRA bombings in the 1970s – I walked right past a car bomb about 30 seconds before it blew up (I was unharmed because I walked round a corner just before the bang). It took me at least half an hour to stop shaking…

  4. Tippis says:

    Travel advisory:
If they just found and defused the bomb, the city will be the safest place on earth for another month or so while the knuckleheads stay underground and cook up another one.

Also, as #3 mentions, it was hellalot more risky to go there in the ’70s — and by “risky”, I mean completely safe.

  5. Jonathan Fox says:

#3 you probably have more chance of dying by falling over while putting your socks on in the morning. Also more people will be killed on the roads everywhere this year. I’d be more afraid of your common auto mobile than some random terrorist threat!

I was shopping in Manchester in the late 90’s. I went home and an hour later the shop and most of the mall attached to it was annihilated. It was a singular event no more random or dangerous than crossing the road or choking on a fish bone.

When your times up, your times up. Just live each day like its your last! 🙂

yippee… another day nearer death arf arf…

  6. Angus says:

George Bush planted it to encite fear. There is no terrorist threat.

    btw…this is sarcasm…

  7. Ben Waymark says:

Still, the travel advice is a good…. not really anything to do with the bomb, but its a damn expensive city to visit!

Of course, at least in London people are generally unarmed… and you don’t have to leave finger prints and a retina can with ‘homeland security’ before entering the country….

-Ben (who lived there for five years….)

  8. rosebush says:

Funny. Perhaps this was a setup to incite fear and terror.

What ever happened to the USA’s NY JFK bombing & New Jersey Military base potential armed coup?

Funny how nobody ever saw a pictures of the so called terrorists and no news organization has done any kind of follow up.

I believe we’re going to see more and more of these so called foiled terror plots, yet you’ll never see any more detail than a front page headline.

    Peace

  9. I know who did it, Dvorak did, he did not want the iPod Phone to dominate the news today. So I staged a fasle attack so that would dominate the news

PS: for those of you who don’t get it this is a joke

  10. moss says:

Folks who are hindered by access only to American TV snooze channels might wish to harass their providers to get some of the for-real news channels, e.g. BBC World News or Aljazeera English.

BBC World showed the car being taken away on a car carrier flatbed. Obviously the “device” wasn’t exploded in situ.

What I hear very little of – is that the car was noticed by an ambulance crew responding to a call in the neighborhood. They noticed the car was full of smoke! What that tells me is that the initiating device failed to do its job – but, that no one noticed it before it was supposed to go off.

It was a dud. Not a bomb that was prevented from going off.

Oh yeah, embarrassing enough iistening to the American morning news twits asking questions like, “Is the Queen safe?”

  11. James Hill says:

#9 – You nailed it: Dvorak and the terrorists have something in common, besides bad hair.

  12. #12 screw you baldy!

  13. Frank IBC says:

Enjoy living in your safe little fantasy coocoon, Rosebush.

  14. @$tr0Gh0$t says:

#12, you just got pwned by #14. Buuuuuurn.

  15. James Hill says:

    #14 – LMAO

#16 – Internet kiddie chat isn’t welcomed here. Besides, anyone that can’t tell the difference between real conversation and a joke… even when #9 said it was a joke… should probably save their iPhone money and buy a life instead.

  16. Gregory says:

pedro – Al Jazeria is actually a pretty high quality news organization.

It’s taken more seriously by journalists and on the world stage than any of the US news corps.

A lot of ex-BBC reporters and journos work there too.

  17. Angus says:

I posted #6 as sarcasm, and not two post later someone posts the same idea, but is serious. It’d be funny if it weren’t so sad…

  18. @$tr0Gh0$t says:

#18, Who are you to dictate what is and isn’t welcome in this website? That’s the work of the editors. Get off that pedestal you put yourself into. And once again, buuuuuurn for #14.

    Tee hee

  19. Frank IBC says:

    Gregory –

That says more about the quality of the BBC than it does about the quality of al-Jazirah.

  20. moss says:

Frank – go back to Fox Snooze and American Idle. It suits you.

Meanwhile, these guys aren’t very good at detonators. Turns out there was a 2nd car – which was towed for a parking violation at 2 AM – which the Metro cops finally realized was similar/same neighborhood and checked it out. Same infernal devices – which didn’t go off.

Further embarrassment? MSNBC’s “expert” saying it must be Al Qaeda because they used limo-like cars as per instructions. He thinks that what the Brits call a “saloon” is a limo. Someone should tell him it’s what we call a “sedan”. Which is French, btw.

  21. MikeN says:

Yeah the intelligence services had no idea. And if they did, the liberals would be screaming how it was a violation of civil rights.

  22. Frank IBC says:

Ah, so according to moss, there is no terrorist threat. We can all return to our warm happy cocoon and ignore reality. It’s all made up by Fox News.

  23. Li says:

Um, there is a threat, but it’s really not anything worth working ourselves up over, let alone casting away all that is truly precious in fear. Do you really think these keystone creeps are as dangerous as, say, Japan, or Russia were, vibrant states with powerful industries? They could hit us with 10,000 9/11s, and it would kill less of our population than were killed in Russia in WWII, and yet they survived even with the encumbrance of a dictatorship over them. And the fact is, even with the most incompetent administration in history, they can’t even hit us with 2.

Osama, I laugh at you, you chose the path of violence, and have earned yourself a living tomb, always in fear. Let’s not follow his example, eh?

  24. noname says:

#15 Frank IBC “Enjoy living in your safe little fantasy cocoon, Rosebush.”

Interesting comment Agent 99, uh I mean #15 Frank IBC.

#8 Rosebush “Funny. Perhaps this was a setup to incite fear and terror.”

It does seem convenient, and less probable that two car don’t explode. I am very glad they didn’t but, it does seem very convenient.

Given ours and the Brittany government strong track record and desire to never lying to the populous, I can see why #15 disparages Rosebush so.

If more people had a healthy scepticism towards government speak, we would have never gone to Bush/Blair War in IRAQ.

  25. Frank IBC says:

And I’m sure the incident in the Glasgow airport today was just a coincidence, too.

Also, “Brittany” is 1) A region in northwestern France 2) An annoying popstar, NOT the nationality of the people living in Great Britain.

And “lying” is a gerund/progressive participle, not an infinitive.

And “populous” is an adjective, not a noun.

  26. noname says:

    #30 Frank IBC

Thanks Frank. I guess, I could use a good Copy Editor like you, are you interested? I pay competitive wages and no benefits (competitive with illegal immigrants).

I know it’s one of those jobs snooty Americans refuse to work (they think they are so above everything).

Still my main point is simple, you seemed to have got it:

If more people had a healthy scepticism towards government speak, we would have never gone into this Bush/Blair War in IRAQ.

  27. joshua says:

What amazes me the most is that because of all the CCTV cams all over London you can’t scratch your ass without it being filmed, but no one saw who parked these cars.
I’m almost tempted to join the conspirosy nuts on this one(Rosebud and Noname), but not quite. This happens just as Brown is begining his first full day as the new Prime Minister, and the British press is already praising him for his remaining so *calm* under fire. This is the same guy the British press said last week would be the shortest P.M. in the last 100 years.

As far as al jazzerra goes…well, it’s not surprising that it’s staffed by ex-BBC people. To most of the BBC reporters this would be a lateral transfer…from one pro Arab/Muslim network to another. I admire the BBC, in str8 reporting they are usually hard to beat….it’s their editorial and story choice’s that are slanted.

They are saying now that the London and Glasgow incidents are connected after all. I was not to sure yesterday, it looked like a typical Friday night Scotsman partier heading home to me. 🙂
