The South Carolina Democratic Party broke its own turnout record in Saturday’s presidential primary and eclipsed the number of ballots cast by residents in the Republican primary the week before.

With 99 percent of precincts reporting, more than 532,000 votes had been tabulated in Barack Obama’s commanding victory here. The returns easily eclipsed the 280,000 people who voted in the Democratic primary in 2004.

Last week, about 446,000 voters took part in the Republican primary, which was nearly 120,000 off the record set by the GOP in 2000.

Uh-huh.

  1. MikeN says:

And Barack got 56% of that massive turnout. I think the Democrats in Congress are worried that the Barrett report will be released to the public. They made sure to redact a hundred pages, but they know any member of Congress can see it, and it’s only a matter of time before it goes public. So now they are lining up to support Barack before the Clinton abuse of power is known. Either that, or they’ll all be audited by Pres. Hillary.

  2. Dallas says:

    Not surprised.

For Democrats, this election is like taking part in reality TV. It’s a contest, so high turnout.

For Republicans, they are so disgusted with their current lemon/disaster of a president, they are embarrassed to go to the polling booths. No surprise there

  3. MikeN says:

But the Republican race is even more of a contest, with 4 or 5 legit candidates, plus Ron Paul.

  4. MikeN says:

You’d best not criticize Hillary too much lest you get placed in her Conspiracy Stream of Communications Commerce. Google it.

  5. qsabe says:

Right on Mike. It’s the democrats to lose and they are doing their damnedest to do that.

  6. Run Paul Run says:

They may have that many votes,
but that doesn’t mean that many voted,
    or that way…

  7. GregA says:

    MikeN,

You make e Hillary’s plans to send prominent Republicans off to Gitmo for treason, and the rank and file off to those FEMA concentration camps sound like a bad thing.

I don’t know about you. but I am desperate to get rid of these clown in or so called ‘government’.

    Throw the bums out.

  10. Don Coyote says:

As a Canadian, getting to kind of like Obama but don’t want to get too fond given the percentage of wankers like #8 with handguns (or guns in hand) in the US.

  11. MikeN says:

    Also Ed Schultz.

  12. Animal Mother says:

The GOP is a smoking crater and the Smirking Chimp’s incompetent administration has occasioned this sad event. Only John McCain can flush-out this suppurating wound of neocons, religious fanatics, and ordinary idiots. If Washington, D.C. is an asshole than the Bush Administration is a tapeworm oozing thru the stink and corruption.

  13. moss says:

    #12 – why so restrained?

  14. OmarTheAlien says:

There is no way a Republican can be elected to the White House, not this time around, and maybe not the next. Georgio and Company simply screwed too many pooches, and never used a condom, and that’s left the American electorate sore in all the usual orifices, plus a few nobody knew even existed.
I, like many others, was bracing for the Hillary Juggernaut, but was surprised when it seemed to stumble. I like Obama, but his age concerns me. But maybe that’s what we need, is a young mind set, instead of the ancient evils of the Bush/Cheny grab all you can get before we leave thing.
Should Obama emerge the victor, then his vice presidential choice will be an interesting one.

  15. ECA says:

    OK,
1/3 of the USA voted in the last few elections.
    Which is about <75,000,000 people..
ARE YOU TELLING ME, OF the 4million in SC 1/8 of that number VOTED in SC??
I think this is a count of THOSE THAT SHOWED UP, from ALL the states, to BACK either party.
    http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/45000.html
But even that 4million people. Adult and voting age, would be 3million, and STILL only 1/6 WERE ALLOWED TO VOTE..(thats RIGHT, ALLOWED)
If you were NOT democrate or republican AND registered Like ANY DOG, you DIDNT get to vote.

  16. ECA says:

    PS.
i wonder WHAT would happen IF 1/2 of the USA REALLY voted.

  17. Awake says:

    #15 – ECA

    You are missing the point.
In a state where Republicans vastly outnumber Democrats, there were far more Democratic voters at the polls. This says a whole lot, things like maybe the Republicans are boycotting their own party, or they don’t like any of the candidates. Lots of Republicans that I know are just plain embarrassed of their party membership. The Democrats, on the other hand, are excited to see a trio of candidates that will move America into the 21st Century, instead of continuing to move back to the age of the Pilgrims and Plymouth rock.

Watch the number of voters that show up for each party… participation will be of paramount importance this time around.

  18. ECA says:

but those numbers are ONLY registered with the PARTY.
    NOT registered voters.
So, WHAT, you get to count those in your Party.
That Does NOT COUNT WHOM the NON-Registered Party members WILL VOTE FOR, which I would GUESS is over 2.5 million NOT COUNTED.

  19. rsh says:

If the slagging does not stop between the Clintons and Obama, watch how fast Americans turn to McCain.

Anyone who does not think the Democrats can lose this isn’t awake.

  20. Mister Catshit says:

    #3, MikeN,

But the Republican race is even more of a contest, with 4 or 5 legit candidates, plus Ron Paul.

    A race to the bottom.

    ***

The lesson to be learned from this is Democrats are tired of smear tactics. After Hillary and Bill tried to tarnish Obama, her numbers reflected the negative response.

Democrats don’t want to eat their own or fall the level of Tom Delay, Newt Gingrich, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, Lee Atwater and the other repulsive scum sucking Republicans, they want to work together to build a better country. Get with the program or get left behind.
