THE HAGUE, Netherlands – Hidden camera footage broadcast by a crime reporter Sunday apparently showed Dutch student Joran van der Sloot admitting he was with American teenager Natalee Holloway when she died on a beach in Aruba in May 2005, and that he called a friend and asked him to dispose of the body at sea. “She suddenly didn’t do anything anymore,” Van der Sloot said of the 18-year-old Holloway in a conversation with a man he believed to be his friend.

Holloway vanished just before she was due to fly home to Alabama, at the end of her high school graduation trip to the Caribbean island. No trace of her has been found since. The exchange, in Dutch, was recorded in a car that had been rigged with three hidden cameras by Peter R. de Vries, a Dutch television crime reporter who claims the footage solves the mystery surrounding Holloway’s disappearance. It was shown on Dutch television. In the video, Van der Sloot said he panicked and tried but failed to revive Holloway after she began shaking and then slumped to the sand.

He then used a pay phone next to a hotel’s swimming pool to call a friend with a boat to dispose of the body, he said. “The ocean is big,” he added. Van der Sloot said his friend assured him he had taken care of Holloway’s body and that the police were not going to locate it. “They will know nothing,” Van der Sloot quoted the friend as telling him. In the images, Van der Sloot speaks matter-of-factly about the case, saying at one point, “I’ve not lost any sleep over this.” In a telephone interview with a Dutch news show Friday night, Van der Sloot acknowledged that he had discussed his alleged involvement in Holloway’s disappearance with a friend, but insisted it was a lie and he had nothing to do with the case.

Is this kid really so stupid as to confide in a crime reporter? He could have gotten away with murder, and may still. It almost seems like he wanted to get caught. Either that or he is thumbing his nose at the system.

Makes me wonder about a couple of things.

As you say–stupid kid, but still may get away with a murder charge==but if he is telling the truth, there was no mureder?==just improper disposal of a body, lying to police, obstruction of justice, conspiracy regarding the above, littering, etc.

A “friend” helps to dispose of the body and doesn’t talk about it? Must have a judge for a daddy to have such friends.

Must be something deep in the human psyche to talk about such a subject. If I decided to do such a thing, and I can see the motive to not get the police involved in such cases, I don’t think I’d ever mention it==but then I’d call the police too.

  2. dm says:

I can almost understand his panicking and rushing to destroy all the evidence. But him saying “I’ve not lost any sleep over this”; that’s pretty bad.

Even if he didn’t cause the girl’s death, he has caused unimaginable suffering for her loved ones by not coming forward and telling the truth.

  3. Judge Jewdy says:

When he was initially arrested they overheard his father tell him, “no body, no crime.” Either way, if he did it he is a criminal, if he didn’t do it and said he lied about it without remorse, he’s criminally insane. The best I could hope for at the point is he becomes Bubba’s wife in jail.

  4. Sceptic says:

Some were truth, and some were lies.
That she was a slut was true. That he didn’t lose one minute of sleep was true. That his friend dumped her body like an old rag was true.

However, that she started shaking when they were caressing was not true. Why? If that was the case, he would have alerted the authority or the medical persons. What really happened was he killed her. There were reports that his father advised him on getting rid of the body, because without a body, they couldn’t touch him. His father deserves to have a worthless son like that, the way he raised him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he dumps his father like an old rag when he gets old.

  5. Mister Apeshit says:

#4 – I don’t understand how you can say she was a slut. If she was drunk, she obviously made a bad decision to go with this guy. That doesn’t make her a slut.

I have personally dated some sluts. I hate having women knock on my door at 4:00 in the morning and I have to get up to let them out.

  6. Ah_Yea says:

I have to agree with #4 all the way. To elaborate further, Van der Sloot is a true sociopath. Assuming anything he said has any truth at all, he has absolutely no remorse for what he did and did not do.
I know that if I was on the beach with someone and she started shaking and passed out, I would be taking her to the hospital without a second thought.

  7. Summerbree says:

Why did he to hide his shoes? Why would he, quote: hang if her body was found? Because of the marks of murder on them…
This man is dangerously insain, calling the victim bad names, enjoying openly his ‘clevernes’ and thinking about how to get more money out of it all.
Yes I think he lied (again ), he lied about her dying by accident.

  8. Dajestar says:

He didn’t confide in a crime reporter, he befriended a guy in the Netherlands that went to the crime reporter. Then this “friend” had cameras installed in his car with the help of the crime reporter and taped all the talks he had with Joran.

  9. jescott418 says:

Can anyone say OJ Simpson? But I am surprised at how little attention the people who were supposed to supervising have been given.
Do we just let these kids run amuck? We don’t seem to put at least some of the blame on Natalie because she went out in a strange place and drank alcohol, unsupervised and we are surprised at the results?

  10. BillM says:

If he lived in the US he could grow up to become a beloved Dem Senator!

  11. aruba defense says:

van der sloot should have called the hospital. holloway should not have mixed cocaine with alcohol and asked him to drink from her navel. and what about the country’s and the media’s reaction a few years ago? boycott travel to aruba? we all acted with a collective insanity. we are no better than a group of crazy arabs (of whom we make so much fun). shame on v.d. sloot, on natalie, on the public media, and on all americans who just emoted without knowing the facts. lynch first ask questions later. time to take a look inside, at who we are. the truth hurts, can we learn from this?

  12. Reality isn't so hard says:

We can deduce very quickly that Van de Sloot’s story is a fabrication. Had his friend taken the body a mere mile offshore and dumped it, it would have washed up on a beach with the next tide. Even if the body had been weighted down, the waters off the coast are relatively shallow and fringed with reefs. Diving and snorkling are common. Somone would have found the body. I think this kid knew he was being recorded and decided to do some chain-yanking.

  13. TL says:

Fact is, if I was a suspect in a murder, I would not go around “making up” lies. I would want to distance myself as far as possible from the incident. Regardless of how she really died, this guy is a sociopath for not trying to get her medical attention, and for saying he didn’t lose sleep over her death.

  14. ChrisinKC says:

Why is everyone bagging on the dude? He might have killed a young stupid cocain snorting hooker. Who cares? The real issue is with the hooker who’s snorting cocain, having sex with men after knowing them for 2 hours, and partying in a different country to celebrate their high school graduation. Seems like her parents should share a lot of the blame too. They should have taught her not to use drugs, not to screw someone after 2 hours, and to not be drinking until you’re legally old enough.

  15. koen says:

I think the guy did it and the confession is real. The crime reporter hired a local guy to become friends with Joran. This took six months. After six months of ‘friendship’ the local guy and Joran did some weet in a car and then Joran began bragging about how he did it. Calling the cops losers and making fun of the dead girl. But he didn’t kill her, he just hid the body.
The problem is that this tape doesn’t proof anything and the guy will walk.

  16. ProudPagan says:

Blame the victim. Always the same old thing. Men go out, get drunk, have a great time AND sometimes get hurt (jumped, etc.). Men are always considered victims after this happens. BUT, let a woman do the same, and she automatically becomes a “slut.” You people truly make me sick! So was he a slut as well? After all by your misguided logic, he only knew her 2 hours as well. Shouldn’t that make him a slut? Fact of the matter is men have been getting off with this kind of behavior since the beginning of time and other men have been protecting them from their behavior since the beginning of time.

  17. Sinn Fein says:

In the US he could be tried and convicted just on the circumstantial evidence. Dutch law may require a dozen eye witnesses, a video recording of the crime and a detailed confession to the Pope..and even then it might be a close one. I have a bad feeling that he’s going to walk yet again.

And the odds finally hit home that rich American families sending their overly privileged brats to a foreign resort for a graduation celebration would get bit in the ass. It was inevitable. Sorry Natalie, your number happened to come up because of your parent’s arrogant display of wealth, their obvious lack of care in helping to protect you and your safety while in a foreign land and your blind trust in all people being good. And, being drunk and /or drugged didn’t pay off.

  18. Mark says:

I don’t understand the fascination with this case. It’s always horrible when someone is murdered, but it’s not more horrible if it’s a pretty white girl, and surely there were other people killed that year and since. Why is this a nationwide sensation? Somebody help me out here.

  19. McCullough says:

#18. Maybe the fact that this kids father is a judge in Aruba and apparently coached his son to elude the charges.

  20. Steve-O says:

Was she a slut or a van der slut?

    Enquiring minds want to know.
