The British Olympic Association will authorize its athletes to wear anti-pollution masks if they feel they are necessary during the Olympic Games in Beijing in August. Officials in the United States, Australia and Canada have indicated that their athletes will not be using masks during competition. But BOA chief executive Simon Clegg refused to rule out a move that would be extremely embarrassing for China. “This is a competitive issue,” Clegg told The Times newspaper. “We are in the business of trying to win medals and beat our competitors. “We are all hopeful that the Chinese authorities will have addressed this issue by August so the athletes are not put in a position where the measures we have put in place have to be deployed. Britain’s former Commonwealth 1500 metres gold medallist Michael East said he was uncertain about the potential benefits of ‘smog-masks’.

“I doubt whether it would be advantageous and I think I would feel uncomfortable wearing one,” he said. “I am sure you may get local runners using them and I suppose if the physiologists say they are advantageous, I might consider it. “But for the moment, I have to say my answer is ‘no’.” Beijing’s mayor, Guo Jinlong, admitted last month that the sprawling, traffic-choked city faced a massive task in trying to bring pollution down to bearable levels in time for the Games. The International Olympic Committee has warned that endurance events such as the marathon could be postponed or canceled to protect competitors if air-quality standards are not met.

Look on the bright side, they could put the official Beijing Olympic logo on them and sell them in the gift shops. Its a win-win.

    “official Beijing Olympic logo”

Exactly what is that? a tank crushing the guy carrying the torch?…

  4. Ah_Yea says:

I can’t tell you just how bad the pollution is in China. When I am there, I try and count the number of days I can see the sky. On the average it’s 3 out of 10.

On my last visit, we flew out of Beijing and -I’m not kidding- we could not see the end of the runway! It was 2:00 in the afternoon and ~80 degrees. This was smog, not fog.

You just have to see it to believe it.

I have lived in LA for most of my life, and the very best day in Beijing-Shanghai-Tianjin-is worse than the very worst day in LA.

I always thought they were for when you have a cold that your courteous enough not to give it to other people.

    Honestly

Well this is dust not “smog”…dust from the encroaching desert threating Beijing. High altitude dust makes Beijing overcast almost daily and in the spring and summer dust and sand storms can be quite terrible.

    Cheers

  7. Ah_Yea says:

Yes, sometimes the dust does come in, but that wasn’t the case that day. It was an inversion layer that wouldn’t quit.

China’s smog is killing people, and not just by the dozens.

Did you know that Beijing is now Officially the world most polluted city?

We should get into a discussion sometimes about the real pro’s and con’s to nuclear power. I believe China should have many more nuclear power plants because: “High levels of air pollution in China’s cities leads to 350,000-400,000 premature deaths, it said. Another 300,000 die because of poor-quality air indoors.” This is PER YEAR!
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6265098.stm
This is far more in one year than all nuclear power plants have ever killed by a factor of 500X, and that includes Chernobyl.

I really love the Chinese people, and I have seriously considered living in Shanghai, but I found the smog to be a read drag!

  8. TIHZ_HO says:

#7 Ah_Yea – Ok fair enough – smog. :) I have some friends who used to live in Shanghai and now live in Beijing and they always complain about the dust never the smog. I suppose mix smog with dust and you get “smogst” which is what Beijing has! LOL!

Shanghai is so much better than Beijing on many levels – not just the weather. ;)

China does not seem too keen on nuclear energy from what I can see. Who knows why? The Three Gorges Dam hydroelectric project is meant to be China’s answer to the US Hoover dam.

    Cheers

  9. Ah_Yea says:

Yea, if there was a possibility of more dams, that would be great! I would like to see the three gorges, it bet is spectacular!

I’m off again to Tianjin and probably Wuhan at the end of March. Like waiting to go to Disneyland.
