#9--Lying Mike==that sounds like what Bush said? I remember being particularly incensed at what a BS statement that was.

1--investing, exports continue increasing, /// yes, all based on a weak and declining dollar. It is actually a negative indicator.

2--and American productivity remains strong. /// With manufacturing job losses in the 10's of thousands each month, it all depends in how you define/measure productivity. I'm sure if you divide the caluculation by the failing dollar, productivity has been falling for quite a while. It just occurs to me that increasing foreclosures probably hits the scales as an increase in productivity/activity?

3--We can have confidence in the long-term foundation of our economy, /// I'd believe that if there was even a proposal on how to get out of our energy/productivity crunch? Thank God for Boone Pickens at least getting the conversation started.

4-- and I believe we will come through this challenge stronger than ever before. /// He's baaaack on craaaack. Call the cops since Congress is too corrupt to act.

A true leader would say "don't just drive less and turn down the A/C and heat - but get rid of your cell phone, ipod, laptop, and all the other electronic gizmos that are sucking up the power like crazy."

Of course any one who says that could never be elected.

You can see the transcript of the press conference yourself.

'The bottom line is this: We're going through a tough time, but our economy has continued growing, consumers are spending, businesses are investing, exports continue increasing, and American productivity remains strong. We can have confidence in the long-term foundation of our economy, and I believe we will come through this challenge stronger than ever before.'

Such snarkiness from Stewart. Editing comments to give the appearance of a contradiction. They were talking about different things in the quotes, but both were saying the economy has major problems but is doing okay.

I'm too young to understand all the Carter hate. I do remember some of the things going on during that time period though, although I'm not sure they're all attributable to Carter and I'm sure y'all will correct me one way or another. My main recollections of the Carter era was a failed Iranian Hostage rescue, the cancellation of the B-1 program and the subsequent layoff of a lot of my friends parents from their aerospace jobs in SoCal and the gas rationing based on the last number of your license plate, odd or even. And gas was like, fifty-something cents a gallon? Did I get any of those right? I just remember a gentleman peanut farmer, his crazy relatives and the media portraying him as sort of wimpy. But I guess we survived all of that.
