North Texas school district will let teachers carry guns | Front page | Chron.com – Houston Chronicle

A tiny Texas school district may be the first in the nation to allow teachers and staff to pack guns for protection when classes begin later this month, a newspaper reported.

Trustees at the Harrold Independent School District approved a district policy change last October so employees can carry concealed firearms to deter and protect against school shootings, provided the gun-toting teachers follow certain requirements.

In order for teachers and staff to carry a pistol, they must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun; must be authorized to carry by the district; must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations and have to use ammunition that is designed to minimize the risk of ricochet in school halls.

Curiously, this will probably work to lower gun-related violence. I think we should all be packing heat.

#29 “Is that fellow with the Glock going down the hallway a teacher or administrator or the crazed lunatic?”

Too bad the cops pretty much always arrive AFTER the carnage, not during…

This is in a community that’s 30 minutes away from the sheriff’s office. This is totally fair. You can’t even get protection by the police in the middle of the city in time when they are just down the street sometimes let alone out in the country. They need to be able to protect themselves, and it is a deterrent to crime when it is known that any one or more of the teachers could have a concealed weapon. Bravo!

Let’s see…the policy now is “no guns at school.” The new policy will be “guns at school.” And your conclusion is “this will lower gun-related violence.” Good one.

Hmmmm. This brings an all new meaning to the phrase “Duck and Cover”, in the classrooms. And once again, Texas takes the lead in proposing the most dangerous solution to a simple problem. Increase the punishment, rather than the firepower. Anyone caught packing will be dropped into a live volcano. Or forced to clean every square inch of a city bus terminal’s Mens room, with their tongue. Whatever it takes to scare the crap out of these jaded brads and their love affair with death and violence.

Once again you have shared your brilliant observations with us. Good post.

I wonder how many people are killed every year in school shootings. Usually when you hear of one, it shocks everyone. People, they are very uncommon which is what makes them so newsworthy.

America has one of the highest gun death rates in the world. The only countries that surpass us are third world nations in anarchy with poor law enforcement and liberal gun laws. To many, the solution is to arm everyone in a fear as a deterrent factor. It hasn’t worked so far and it won’t work with even more guns.

Yes I know, some wing nut will come along telling us how he would have been beaten up if he wasn’t packing. The other side is maybe he is lucky his adversaries weren’t packing. When everyone is carrying, it will be the gang with the biggest and best weapons that will prevail.

Just seems fair. If the kids are bringing heat into the classrooms, the teachers should be able to as well.

If an irrational person or student with a gun came into a classroom, I’d personally feel better knowing there were rational person(s) in the room with guns. It would take away the power of the nut with the gun.

If you can’t get rid of the guns, give them to everyone over the age of 16.

#28 GregAllen – I agree, Nurse Ratched should not carry a gun

Here’s a question for those scared of guns.

If everyone had a sidearm how many people would walk into a liquor store with clients and try to rob it? About zero.

Now, on the flip side, if you could guarantee me that you could get rid of ALL guns (including the gov’t) then I’d gladly give up mine.

    Deal?

Well, I think it would be a little higher than zero.

If store clerks were packing .22 target pistols, all you (as the robber) need to do is get a .45 ACP MAC-10 or an AK-47 (with hi capacity magazines), and *voilĂ *, problem solved.

    #39, Cow-Paddy,

In addition to Mustards remarks, maybe all it would take would be two or three bandits. One to do the robbery while one or two to watch out for his back.

The end result would be a lot more “accidental” shootings where people not involved get hurt. It doesn’t matter how much time you spend on the firing range, in the heat most people panic and miss a lot more than they hit their target.
