We just got a call from Devline Rossell, a charter captain based out of Venice, Louisiana. He was shopping in New Orleans to get some supplies before the arrival of Gustav (currently listed as a tropical storm that has left at least 22 dead in the Caribbean) and reported that the item most in demand was not food, clothing or shelter.

“I just left a sporting goods store and you would think that the number-one selling item would be plywood or potable water or gasoline right now,” he said. “Apparently it is AR-15s and .223 ammo. I watched at least 20 people buy AR-15s and cases of .223.”

Can’t say I’m surprised. After the nightmare that was Katrina I think it would be unwise for anyone to assume the state, local or federal government could guarantee his or her personal safety during a natural disaster. Of course, I think it is foolish to assume that under any circumstance.

The AR buying spree demonstrates that people don’t think of it as an “assault weapon” but rather an arm that is ideally suited for self-defense, which it is. I also suspect that for some of the folks this is their first firearm. Goes to show that not only is there no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole but that there is no such thing as a gun-control advocate in one either.

  1. Mr. Fusion says:

there no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole

Especially in a flood when your foxhole is under 10 feet of water. Now the religious weirdos might still being there waiting for some miracle from god, but the atheists are smart enough to seek higher ground.

  2. McCullough says:

#18. Probably varies from state to state. Hey, as long as he’s not drinking, gambling, and shooting…whats the problem. I know, you hate guns…it’s OK. I don’t love them, am not a nut, but I live in a place where they are necessary sometimes, even to take a walk.

  3. Paddy-O says:

#18 “Maybe its just K-Mart here in Ca then, or maybe I just wasn’t paying attention, or maybe it was a pawn shop?”

Nope, a major gun shop in Orange County.

You should watch who you hang out with. “Debt collectors” might someday show up at his house while you are there…

  4. #7 – Scottie

    >>Careful with that atheists in foxholes line.
    >>The atheists in foxholes find it quite
    >>understandably to be highly offensive.

I see no evidence in that link to support the notion that any of the people involved in that group have ever been “in a foxhole”. In fact, I see no evidence that any of them have ever been in combat. The list of individuals and organization endorsing “Atheists in Foxholes” looks like it was drawn up from a group of students, pacifist organization, and people from the Navy, Coast Guard, and reserves who have never had anyone lobbing grenades at them or spraying their position with automatic weapons fire.

I think the phrase “there are no atheists in foxholes” is, by and large, true.

  5. Paddy-O says:

#24 “I think the phrase “there are no atheists in foxholes” is, by and large, true.”

    Yep.

  7. ArianeB says:

Gustav could not come at a worse time for the GOP!

Its scheduled to arrive on the first day of the convention, so all the major press will be paying attention to that instead of the convention.

Even if Gustav turns into a dud (lets hope) its going to generate memories of the Katrina debacle

  8. natefrog says:

    Mustard;

“I think the phrase “there are no atheists in foxholes” is, by and large, true.”

By using the disclaimer “by and large”, you admit the phrase actually is not true.

  9. George says:

As much as I like the AR15, they, like all rifles, are guns better suited for use in the field. I’d worry about rounds carrying for blocks and hitting unintended targets.

I recall an incident a year or so ago when an idiot cop in the midwest was shooting at a snake in a birdhouse with a pistol, and his bullets carried 200yds or so and killed a little boy in his grandfather’s arms.

A shotgun is a better choice in times of social unrest IMHO.

  10. Thomas says:

    > The AR buying spree demonstrates
    > that people don’t think of it
    > as an “assault weapon”

Only people clueless about the mechanics of firearms think the term “assault weapon” has any real meaning. It is like banning certain cars because they look fast.

  11. #28 – Natefrog

    >>By using the disclaimer “by and large”,
    >>you admit the phrase actually is not true.

Oh no, sure there are SOME (albeit very few) atheists in foxholes.

By and large, the phrase is true. When people are faced with catastrophic disasters they have no control over, most turn to a power greater than themselves.

And Scottie’s link to a site put together by non-combat reservists and armchair quarterback does nothing to diminish the validity of the statement.

  12. Thomas says:

    #31
I do not agree. I think your conclusion is skewed based on the makeup of the population. In other words, it is already the case that there are very few atheists in the military. So, in order for us to evaluate the statement objectively, we’d have to look at the number of people that previously claimed themselves to be atheists and then become religious while under fire. I bet the number is tiny. In addition, simply yelling “Oh God” when you are shot is not an indication of a change.

  13. revenge says:

I’ll take a high cap 12 gage shotgun with a load of slugs and 00 buckshot any day over an AK-47 or an AR-15. A 12 gage, loaded this way is more distructive than a machine gun and will shred body armour.

  14. Bill Wentworth says:

Gun control is Not about guns, its about control

Just dont let the Federal Goons Disarm you like they did during Katrina

Protect You & Yours & God be with you +

  15. Dave says:

Some people are slow learners,it takes an event such as Katrina with its accompanying breakdown of order into chaos(along with police refusing to do what must be done).
It’s possible that more will die from these additional arms in private hands,AT LEAST IT WILL BE THE RIGHT GROUP OF PEOPLE DYING THIS TIME!

  16. A. Magnus says:

Let the National Guard and Blackwater try taking the guns from law abiding citizens this time around – I hope the real Americans in New Orleans make Lexington and Concord look like a tea picnic. Bullies don’t stop unless confronted with armed and intent resistance.

  17. gunsVsGod says:

Isaiah 66:4: I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.

If you don’t care for guns, Isaiah 66:4 is saying that, if you have faith, God will watch over you, whereas those who are so fearful as to put their trust only in guns instead of God, God will bring their fears upon them.

  18. ConcealedCarry says:

In the state of Indiana, if you have a hand gun permit, you can walk in and buy without any waiting period.

Shotguns are, without a doubt, the best home defense weapons.

.223 rounds travel at 4000 fps and tumble or fragment on contact with virtually anything. In Vietnam, the soldiers didn’t like them because they wouldn’t penetrate foilage unlike the AK47 round.

The Chinese version of the AK47 is called a Mek 90. It is an excellent knockoff and very accurate.

Hopefully, everyone in the Big Easy will have enough sense to leave this time. But, I doubt it….

  19. pkrevbro says:

    I live in Louisiana.

There is a background check for gun purchases, can take anywhere from five minutes to a couple of days depending on what flags up on your profile.

If I were them, I’d wait a couple of days and then there’ll be a “clearance sale” on all sporting goods.

Oh, and I own a number of guns in my household. Despite this fact, my total number of people killed is still at zero.

Guns don’t kill people. Bad muthaf—ers with guns kill people.

And gun control takes the guns out of my household, not guns out of criminals’ hands. Criminals usually don’t start donating their guns to charity just because it’s illegal to own them.

  20. Lese Majeste says:

A 12 ga shotgun with 00 buckshot is fine for close in work, but one really should have something like the AK47 when you want to reach out and touch someone.

My AK47 is the Egyptian version called the “Mahdi” and it’s as accurate as any deer rifle.

With the 40 round clip, it’s ready to rock.

I figure i can get off about half of that clip before some government goon squad, like Blackwater, lights me up.

And it will be time well spent.
