Friends at the LHC in Geneva say this shutdown is a much to do with safety as anything. Those embedded sensors are radioactively hot, for weeks after a cycle. If there’s a malfunction and some are damaged, they can’t just go in and replace them, they have to wait.

Hey John,

A few weeks ago you said that Palin would leave the campaign, that McCain had made a big mistake. I told you at the time you were wrong, and in fact it was far more likely that Obama would throw Biden under the bus.

You still think Palin will leave the campaign and that Obama will keep Joey Hairplugs, who is more gaffe-prone than Dan Quayle?

I know this is OT and all, but it is fun to see you ignore this after you made a big stink about it weeks ago.

The myth continues, regarding the “hacker” kid. He may be in a heap of trouble, but who cares.

The real story here, which the “drive-by media” seems to ignore, is “what was Sarah Palin up to”??

I hope there’s better resolution to this incipient scandal than there was to the rectangular object that Dumbya was sporting under his jacket during the ‘04 debates.

I think Google is trying to expand their “platform” onto the phone, just as Apple is. RIMM and Nokia (Symbian) are both running aging platforms which will need a huge refresh (hard to code for, 1990’s style distribution model for sw) and Microsoft has fallen asleep.

It seems that no one learned the lesson of the 80’s and 90’s PC wars. It’s not about the platform, it’s about the software. Apple and Google have appealing developer platforms (remember Visual Basic?) – that’s where this war will be won and lost.

John, how can YOU say such stupid things about the LHC? You got internet, don’t you? Can’t you just go and look out what’s the current weather in Switzerland? The LHC’s stop has nothing to do with the weather!
What they’re saying is that the LHC, like all the CERN equipments, is stopped for a certain period every winter FOR MAINTENANCE. So, the LHC will only start after the normal winter maintenance stop. Point.
