I suspect that the life jackets we saw in the pictures were given out by the ferries and tugs pulling the passengers off.

The fuel tanks weren’t full. It was a short flight (for that plane) and they don’t carry more weight than needed so as to not burn unneeded fuel. Since it wasn’t full of fuel and didn’t break up it isn’t a surprise that it stayed afloat. Big hollow, water tight wings full of air.
