Now I need to go check my boxes.

# 3 BryanP said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 2:57 pm

That’s the IR sensor for the remote you dork.

# 4 Sinn Fein said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 2:58 pm

Are we not surprised? Smile and don’t fart for the camera! :) Cheeeeeeeesey!

# 5 Personality said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 2:58 pm

It is glued to a mounting bracket with not leads coming out of it. FAIL.

# 6 Professor Johnnycakes said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 2:59 pm

Oh my… and it will broadcast me nude, eating cheesepuffs watching desperate housewives of Orange County Choppers back to through the antenna… oh wait, nevermind.

# 7 smartalix said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:03 pm

if you’re that worried, put it in a box and operate it manually.

# 8 The DON said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:04 pm

if this is genuine, then it is a great one for Crackpot (Adam Curry) in the No Agenda netcast :-)

Just what do they hope to see?

And you thought us Brits were bad. That is more big brother than we have. . . . . well almost.

# 9 GregA said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:05 pm

Why would the government do this when they can just beat down your door, handcuff you, then shoot you in the back and kill you, and the only chance you have for justice is if someone could intercept this video signal?

# 10 The DON said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:08 pm

I say hoax actually. How would the video/audio feed leave the box? As I understand, these boxes recieve a broadcast signal and output it to your TV. They have no broadcast capability and the reason for having these is that you do not have cable hooked up.
I could be mistaken on this – hearing scraps of news from across the pond. . . . I make assumptions on the need for these boxes.

# 11 killer duck said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:09 pm

Here’s the basic problem with the Internet…any fucking moron can post to it.

# 12 Improbus said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:09 pm

Now I will have to get stoned in a V mask.

# 13 ChuckM said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:10 pm

Mounted on a transformer. Ya, great design. Hoax.

# 14 . said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:12 pm

Hoax. Why the hell does this crap get posted?

# 15 killer duck said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:15 pm

By the way…my comment was directed at the moron that created the hoax video…not Uncle Dave’s posting here.

# 16 Spying Is Fun said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:15 pm

Actually Dvorak knows more about you than the government ever could.

# 17 My tinfoil hats to tight said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:16 pm

Where’s that BS measuring device that is suppose to go with this kind of post

# 18 TooManyPuppies said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:17 pm

Nice job falling for the hoax, dipstick!

If you weren’t so late to the party, you’d know Wired already spoke to the hoaxer. Try to keep up next time.

# 19 deadpixel said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:23 pm

this was proven a fake a couple days ago. the so called camera wasn’t attached to anything by wire.

sorry john but you’re late on this one too. if i can find that link that shows what they did i’ll send it to ya.

# 20 amodedoma said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:25 pm

Laughably obvious, so why am I posting? For the same reason as the rest of these nimrods…

# 21 PMitchell said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:26 pm

that is not a real board from a dtv box I used to “work ” on them and have pulled eproms and jtagged dozens and that is not a dtv board it is a cheap piece bought at radio shack with a few glued on parts to look real

# 22 The System (aka The Man, The Military Industrial Complex) said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:31 pm

Ha ha ha ha ha! That is just a decoy … you’ll never find where we really hid the cameras …

# 23 hhopper said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:35 pm

I just wonder what type of stupid, numb-nuts, idiotic, brain-dead, asshole goes to the trouble to make a video like that.

# 24 Uncle Dave said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:45 pm

Oh, did I forget to post a link to the article?
My bad.

# 25 dumbassliberals said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:46 pm

# 26 dvorakfan99999 said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:48 pm

I suspected a hoax from the beginning, not because I know anyting about his stuff, (I don’t), but I have learned to be very suspicious of stuff on the Internet.
Best comment so far is #22.

# 27 DaveyDaveyDaveDave said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 3:50 pm

Macs have a built in webcam and people love it. But when its not on an apple product people hate it. Whats wrong with the world, do people not like suprises anymore?

# 28 Hugh Ripper said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 4:10 pm

Clearly a hoax.

What worries me is that someday soon people will feel insecure when they DONT have a camera watching them. If only Orwell and Huxley could see us now.

# 29 SmartAss said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 4:23 pm

… made by a magnavox competitor.

# 30 ECA said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 4:29 pm

1. CCD camera ARE IR sensors..
2. WOW and you think they have a 1 mile range?? DOUBT IT!!
3. Go for it, MOUNT your CCD ON A TRANSFORMER..
4. the other thing he pointed at, is the LED POWER ON light..

And you wonder WHY its out of focus..

# 31 ECA said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 4:33 pm

My comment goes like this…

$2-5 worth of PARTS sold to you for $40-60..
No audio balance,
NO direct channel tuning, you can go to channel 11-2,11-3, directly..11-1 first, then channel up.

# 32 this guy said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 4:57 pm

if the government actually wanted to spy on people, a machine that less than 50% of the population needs is not the way they would go about it. it’s more likely that your toilet has a camera in it.

# 33 DarkFox said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 5:04 pm

More fuel to keep No Agenda going :P

# 34 fpp2002 said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 5:37 pm

Yeah, that’s not a microphone, that’s a standard thru-hole, 3 leg, front adjust potentiometer. At least try to make it look like an actual microphone, dumbass.

# 35 Mr. Fusion said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 5:50 pm

Uncle Dave,

You’re a baaaaaaaaad man.

# 36 dbran1949 said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 5:56 pm

Damn, is it April 1st already. I better start on my taxes

# 37 orangetiki said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 6:17 pm

Wow. Good thing I read that this is a HOAX before I went and opened my box. Maybe I will put stickers in front of it to be sure.

# 38 orangetiki said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 6:18 pm

P.S. How were you supposed to get the signal to Magnavox anyways? The electrical plug?

# 39 David said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 6:36 pm

Hoax!!!

# 40 faxon said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 6:42 pm

The “microphone” he points to is a variable resistor. Or I thought it was… Maybe…maybe all of the circuit boards I have worked on for the last 29 years had MICROPHONES!!!!!!!! OHHHH NOOOOOOO……

# 41 Alfred1 said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 7:00 pm

How short memory the public has…

A mere month ago, Bush would have been blamed for the camera…and it would be confidently stated his fellow travelers at skull and bones want to see you all in your shorts, if you watch Hannity & Combs, or just espn…

# 42 ClickWheelMac said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 7:34 pm

I buy anything if it’s shiny and made by Apple

# 43 selt06 said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 7:34 pm

Magnavox and Wal-mart should file suit against these guys for this video. Of course they probably still live in their mom’s basement.

# 44 BigBoyBC said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 8:10 pm

Come on Uncle Dave, where is the BS meter!!

# 45 GF said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 8:12 pm

# 13 ChuckM – Bingo, you win.

I heard these DTV boxes allow you to see hidden channels the government doesn’t want you to see like 3.2 or 12.2. Super secret weather channels only the dark overlords know about.

# 46 FRAGaLOT said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 8:13 pm

#10 my EXACT thoughts too. How exactly would the video/audio feed get sent back? They need to check for any sort internal antenna that would broadcast a signal. At best you could only pick up that signal if you were parked across the street. Like a TV detector van.

Also that “microphone” didn’t look like a mic, it had 3 leads on it. A mic only needs 2. It was probably a potentiometer for adjustments done at the factory.

This is clearly a hoax/disinfo movie.
But isnt the infrared device technically a camera?

# 49 inussrtvwatchesu said, on February 23rd, 2009 at 11:44 pm

I glued a small lens over the hole where the camera is. Then over that I mounted a slide of
my dog taking a dump. Watch that all day, you
evil NSA/CIA/IRS. HA HA HA !!!!

# 50 leo said, on February 24th, 2009 at 12:33 am

>But isnt the infrared device technically a camera?

If you consider a one pixel non-visible light capturing device to be a camera. Then yes.

>I say hoax actually. How would the video/audio feed leave the box?

Via the antenna?

# 51 RicoSauve said, on February 24th, 2009 at 4:34 am

“gee why can’t I get in focus”
lol
and to the people that don’t think microphones need 3 wires, it’s called a ground!

how about you go look at a professional level microphone like an SM58 or a clone of that, and the XLR cables that come from it… how many leads? that’s right! 3!

as for broadcasting back thru the same antenna that the HD signals come in on.. well that would take a whole other section of the board to get that done.

Very funny video though, for spying on the redneck hicks and hill people that either can’t afford or receive cable and satellite TV. Is this spying happening to track family trees in these areas?

# 52 gquaglia said, on February 24th, 2009 at 6:09 am

Of course they probably still live in their mom’s basement.

Its a command center!

# 53 Mr. Fusion said, on February 24th, 2009 at 6:21 am

For those who don’t understand how the signal could be transmitted back? Silly hoomans.

Try over the electrical supply. How soon they forget Internet over Electrical Grid.

# 54 igeek said, on February 24th, 2009 at 7:10 am

Of course it’s fake – it’s the cable boxes that have cameras.

# 55 Glenn E. said, on February 25th, 2009 at 4:43 am

Ohhh, remember the Tv series “Max Headroom”? They had Tvs of the near future, that could see who was watching them. So they could rate the shows without the need for viewers’ journals. Well they NEVER did make a two way Tv screen, now did they? And two way video transmission has only become feasible with FIOS and digital Cable. But the Tv networks haven’t sprung for the infrastructure to rig every home up to work like that. Maybe in 50 more years, they will. Just to make sure you watch all the commercials, before seeing the program.
