Let me give you an analogy.

I live in a nice neighborhood. You live in a crappy neighborhood. If I drive my car past your neighborhood, it's OK to steal my car and everything in my trunk simply because you're poor? When did being poor become an excuse to start breaking the law with no consequences. Eastern Europe was as poor as it got after WWII. However, they started building and bringing in business to improve their economy and infrastructure. They WORKED to improve their lives instead of feeding off the success of others.

somalai? so just go right ahead and eat that fish..
we'l see if the polution is present?
i'd like to say this as well? if you want a "world economy" you'v got to treat all people fair, not all of somalai are pirates.

deow,
the only places the USA GOV. has stuck their NOSE in, is when there is OIL, or corp backing..
Every time there is something WE CAN DO, NOT involving OIL, we dont do ANYTHING..

>Why can’t these huge vessels have armed patrol boat escorts?

How many trips do you think are made? How much is each patrol escort?

Questions re recent attack on American vessel: why has FBI prevented questioning of US crew? Why hasn't captain been interviewed? Why all the secrecy???? Why can't these huge vessels have armed patrol boat escorts? Or why don't they arm themselves as merchant vessels did in 18th and 19th centuries? Hard to believe the Somali pirates in small boats can capture big ships over and over again.

The poor and the innocent didn't supply the boats and guns.

The men on the boats are no longer innocents.

Yeah the place needs a government but the only way to give them one is move in and shoot a lot of people.

You want the job?

Do you want us to do the job?

Have various slim balls been screwing over these people? Sure but is it our job to fix it? We weren't even on the suspects list.

Fixing other peoples messes is how we ended up in various wars in locations a long way from home.

#12 <i>I doubt if killing every single Somali pirate would solve it for any length of time. But it might send a message.</i>

a) It sure would cut down on recidivism.
b) Yep. "Don't attack that ship. It's got a US flag. Bad juju."

#28, <i>"And if the US were to conquer Somalia to prevent this dumping, and provide a government"</i>

It's not like Somalia is some big region of lawless anarchy. Much of the "governance" there has just become very decentralized. Sort of like how much of Africa was before the Europeans came around and eventually decided to arbitrarily draw borders, dividing it up amongst themselves.

So when are we going to see some evidence that the Somalian beaches are all waste pits? "Some" European companies (countries?) have "dumped" radioactive materials and toxic wastes there. OK, fine, who, how much, and where? Somalia has a rather large coastline.

There has been plenty of accusations but the only link told us less then McCullough's referenced story.

The pirates recently plaguing shipping aren't interested in compensation for their beach dumps. They are solely looking for booty to loot and extortion money be paid. Whether you call them Pirates, War Lords, or Thieves, they are just the same. They care nothing about the people in Somalia.

So now we know what's very likely part of those World Trade Conferences talks. Where to dump the some of the stuff that they don't want, and steal some of the stuff that they do want. How about the coast of some country, that the UN allowed to go to hell. Billions have been spent (or wasted) to fix the Iraqi government, and to keep Israel going. But screw Somalia. Let it fall, and we'll exploit their resources that they can no longer defend.

That must be part of the 21th century's robber baron strategy. They can no longer find undiscovered nations to exploit. So they bring down some existing ones, every so often. And then loot them. So what country will be next of the chopping block? I'm sure only the CIA and the Bilderbergs know that.

The country will never heal with these tribal warlords in place. Most people know the answer to end this. Move the navel assets into the harbors and shell them flat. You keep it up until they no longer have the ability or will to continue piracy. A lot of innocents will die, and corpses and wounded will be all over the TV. No country have yet to want their flag associated with this. As far as ships being armed, that depends on their registries regulations. The problem is they can't enter a port armed.
