Do Jews actually need money in Israel? I thought they were all living on their government’s “settlement” dole. Home, job, and living expenses covered. You can’t jumpstart a nation into existence, in just a few decades, without comping everyone’s way that shows up. Economic systems don’t spring into being that quickly. Unless something valuable were discovered there, like gold or diamonds. Neither of which Israel produces. But government money, and property, being given away. Yeah, that’s like a gold rush. Only guess who all really paid for it? And whose property it was, before their armed forces took it?

I agree, this story sounds too fishy to be true. More like some propaganda, leading up to something. Perhaps another armed offensive.

@ Nancy Disgrace. Absolutely agree that the mother could be senile but I doubt the daughter stole it. Should have told her mother at some point that hey mom I took the cash instead of foolishly discussing their story in the press then going to a dump yard to search for said mattress. Yeah her mother would be pissed but she already pissed at the daughter for throwing out the mattress to begin with if this story is true.

Similar story I heard when I began sailing…before forced vacations began, when sailors could remain on ships working, for decades…

One sailor kept all his money in his mattress, which was fine as long as he didn’t leave.

But he got sick, and while away the Steward noted his mattress was never changed…its a rule they must every few years…so it was tossed over the side somewhere in the Atlantic…

Whenever I am on the Atlantic…I look for it.

#2: I thought the same thing at first, but if the internet is right (and it always is ) a single US note has dimensions of 2.6″ x 6.1″ x 0.004″. This gives a volume of roughly 0.07″^3 per US note. For a typical king size mattress of dimensions 76″ x 80″ x 12″ (again, according to the infallible internet) giving a volume of ~73,000″^3. Finally, 73,000″^3/0.07″^3 works out to about 1.05 million notes fitting in the mattress. So if she takes the springs completely out, she could actually use $1 bills.

Yes, there is something wrong with this story. Didn’t the daughter actually tell the mother she was going to buy a new mattress? The mother was obviously in the house, etc.

BTW, I would assume the mattress was very, very heavy with holes and tears where the money was stuffed, and she didn’t notice??

Depending on denomination, a million dollars would take up considerable cubic footage. And this lady is in Israel, so assume she kept it in shekels at about four shekels per dollar. Nah, I don’t think so. BS on this story.

Anyone really believe this crazy old woman actually had $1 million saved up? Maybe $10,000, possibly $100,000 – but if you had $1 million in cash in a mattress, WTF wouldn’t you mention it to your family, who might like to spend some of it on food and shelter (and new mattresses)?
