In an odd dispute between animal-rights activists and — of all people — veterinarians, “It’s “gloves off,” says PETA president and co-founder Ingrid Newkirk. Members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals plan to protest a fish-throwing demonstration from the employees of Pike Place Fish at the opening ceremony of The American Veterinary Medical Association’s annual convention, to be held July 11-14 in Seattle.
Here are the basics: PETA objected to the use of “their corpses used as toys” in a statement about the fish, and offered to send rubber replacements to the convention. Newkirk says PETA will “identify every vet who participates and carry the objection back to his/her hometown practice.”
This whole thing is beginning to sound like an extortion scheme.
I am going fishing for sea kittens today. PETA will hate that. Maybe I should just wear my shirt that says, “People for the Eating of Tasty Animals” shirt to let everyone know how I feel as I maim and torture small animals by putting a hook in their mouth and filleting and barbecuing the sea kittens I catch.
I hope I am anyway. It was raining this morning, so it might be too dangerous to go out on the water.

I agree PETA is an over the top organization. I don’t agree with many of their “in your face” tactics.
Having said that, throwing dead animals around for fun is rather silly and not conducive for teaching kids about natural resources.
I like flying fish. Ban PETA from the market.

I don’t think ‘carrying the protest back to his/her hometown’ is going to have much impact. Most people aren’t going to find a new vet for Fido just because he tossed a fish around.

I’m not a hippie — I’m a fiscal conservative. I just don’t believe that this activity is appropriate or desirable. As far as I know, PETA doesn’t receive government funding or subsidies, like the government breast-feeding agribusiness and hunting entities do! Go PETA!
