Search Ixquick. I read that startpage is Ixquick depending on whether you are in Britain or not. And it's definitely not junk. It's a multiple search engine that yields more than Google in number of results securely. I read somewhere it might even be with 100% SSL but you will have to confirm that with Ixquick. They dump your information in 48 hours.

I liked the idea of Ixquick, but it's really slow and censors results.

Very nice - and the advanced syntax page is excellent

BUT

With no warning or choice about it, their deskbar installation added an additional adware button on the taskbar (BTB), and if you delete that, the deskbar goes away also. So for me, it's just another intrusive adware product that I don't need. At least they could have asked first!

Yahoo logs searches as well. Turning off web history in your Google account doesn't prevent them from logging, by I.P. address, your searches. It merely hides the history from the users view. The searches are still logged and kept indefinitely.

I'm more than happy to support a company which respects the privacy of its users.

Yahoo logs searches as well. And pausing the history doesn't stop logging of searches by IP. It just hides it from the user's view, it doesn't delete it from Google's logs. I'm more than happy to support a company which respects the privacy of the people who wish to use it's services.

#26 Mark T, this has nothing to do with tracking you. My example has to do with finding what you are looking for on the web. And if you don't want Google to track your every move, then use Yahoo, or turn on private browsing, or go through a system to fake your IP. This browser is not a solution to privacy. Also, in Google, you can "Pause" the tracking of web history and it will stay off until you turn it back on.

I dumped Google for this 6 years ago.
My only beef is it has no news search, like the other big search sites.
The reason I switched was, I like to see my porn before Cheney and the NSA does.
Make sure you hit settings.

Thanks, Mr. D. I have been waiting for a good alternative to Google that doesn't track your every move.

Did you find this through Googling? I am surprised it showed up.

This one is secure: http://scroogle.org

I won't use ixquick/startpage because it removes the query from the address line (GET method). I love the query on the address line because it lets me create shortcuts on Firefox so I can type my query right into the address bar, no matter what page is on at any given time. For example, I type "gg query", hit Enter and go to http://google.com/search?safe=off&q=query

Of course, no one is going to see this comment now, because many other newer articles have been posted. I posted this comment yesterday, but the moderation on this site doesn't work. Other "moderated" comments I have posted have disappeared. They should change the wording to "If your comment doesn't show up immediately, SUBMIT IT AGAIN."

I'm not a big fan of this site. Here is a test: Type in John C. Dvorak and see what pictures show up in the Pictures search (hint: he's not even in the first row0. Now compare this to Google's search which yields far many more results. Try it with video and the first four hits are the exact same video. Google, again, does a much better job.

I just started using this after seeing this post. The results are good. I was unable to find a way to search by date though or to easily switch between their equivalent of advanced search and regular search without losing my search terms. Still, overall I like it and will use it first on principle unless I need the more advanced features of google's advanced search or google scholar search.
