Slashdot – August 22, 2009:

“If you’re brilliant, work really hard, and earn a world-class doctorate from a US university, IBM has a job for you at one of its US research sites — as a ‘complementary worker‘ (as this 1996 piece defined the then-emerging term). But be prepared to ship out to India or China after you’ve soaked up knowledge for 13 months as a ‘long-term supplemental worker.’ Newsweek sketches some of the bigger picture, reporting that IBM, HP, Accenture, and others are finding it profitable to detach from the United States (even patenting the process). ‘IBM is one of the multinationals that propelled America to the apex of its power, and it is now emblematic of the process of creative destruction pushing America to a new, less dominant, and less comfortable position.’”

The middle classes are born to work. If there isn’t work, of course we will travel. And take our mortgage payments, pension schemes, kids, education, votes with us.

  2. noname says:

    Unfortunately this is not news.

Corporate citizen ship is long dead; MBA’s and wall-street made sure of that.

Corporate America does not view America as a country to support or give corporate treasure too, by tax or other means. America is just a country to be exploited for profit, period.

It is so ironic Conservatives demand the media focus American’s attention on demanding harsher and harsher penalties and new laws to wip individual citizens in line, but; corporate America is given guidance and American treasure to expand their profits at our expense.

All this is not new; the public long knew American corporations disdain for the public interest. After the DotCom bust and the U.S. stock market tumbled; the government again pledged to investigate corporate activities. The SEC began investigations of Qwest Communications International, Inc., Global Crossing Ltd., and other corporations. As more scandals of spurious accounting practices emerged across the country, media “experts” claimed the increased competition resulting from antitrust legislation encouraged certain companies to cross the line of legality in order to remain viable.

  3. Bushed says:

Does this mean they’ll go to India and China for their government bail-outs?

  4. soundwash says:

goes to show you how brain dead this country has become if this is considered to be a new revelation/sound byte

  5. Steve Reno says:

Nonsense. It is America that has changed, not IBM representing business in general.

Business always seeks a favorable environment and for decades America has worked very hard to NOT be the environment which favors that which “propelled it … to its apex of power” in the past.

Stupid is as stupid does. Go figure.

  6. Jägermeister says:

You wanted capitalism… this is it.

  7. bill says:

    WOW! you weren’t kidding!
I guess I’d rather go to China.. in that case.

  8. Dick Weed says:

Wrong! This is capitalism tied down with confiscatory taxes and ridiculous regulations. Why do you think they are moving?

  9. Jägermeister says:

#8 – Dick Weed – Why do you think they are moving?

They’re moving to get cheap talent. China and India has tons of it.

  10. Weary Reaper says:

Don’t tell me Americans are finally starting to figure out international corporations are international and not American.

    Will wonders never cease?

  11. pcsmith says:

*8 It is not the taxes that bog down US business, it is the cost of labor.

How can the small guy make a 10 million bonus if they pay the minimum wage plus unemployment insurance plus FICA, plus health insurance, etc.

If you don’t like the low tax rate in the USA, move to another country.

  12. Unimatrix0 says:

You can thank the United States government’s anti-business tax code for this result.

  13. noname says:

    # 12 Unimatrix0 and
    # 5 Steve Reno

Really most intelligent people believe the current economic climate is due to corporate lobbying and campaign support influence. Case in point is the Repeal of Glass Steagall that has caused the current Crisis, Robert Kuttner Congressional testimony.

This is what they thought in 1999.

  14. Amsterdamned says:

We can abandon American corporations too, and I have tried to do so with some success.

For instance, it is easy to buy direct from China nowadays e.g. via DealExtreme. Or you can go to Walmart, which seems the least abusive toward customers, and pay a small markup to buy an Asian product.

I’d never buy a product from HP (the hell with Carly Fiorina), Dell, GM, Ford, et cetera.

  15. Jägermeister says:

    #14 – Amsterdamned

In either of your cases, you’re not buying directly from China…

And it was a while since Carly Fiorina left the HP building… not that HP has become much more ethical…

  16. Ah_Yea says:

Funny how no one here puts the blame where it belongs.

On you, me, and everyone else who buys foreign.

If we all looked carefully the next time we walked into Walmart, Kmart, Biglots, etc. and realized that new bowl made in India, China, Singapore, etc. took a job away from us…

I challenge you now to look in your cupboard or garage and see where your stuff was made.

Then look in the mirror to see who is to blame.

  17. eggman9713 says:

#12, unless your company is employee owned, which ours is, so our company’s corporate tax rate is basically zero. And we have over $50 million in revenues each year.

  18. Bob says:

Well when you have a government, that is anti-corp, then you will see the corps leave. Just look at this blog on any day of the week to see how much the left flat out hates any large corporation.

  19. pedro says:

Well, I think that’ll be good for America’s economy. That will kick-start the recovery, fer sure.

    #9 Yeah, that’s it. That’s the only reasons why they’re moving. You’re such a bright mind…

  20. Eric says:

Might be time to open an American take out restaurant (model it like a 1950′s diner) in Hong Kong. In 40 or so years, everyone in Asia will joke about the astrology chart on the placemats and teen agers will amaze their dates with the proper use of a knife and fork.
