Dvorak asked for some Brazilian news, here it is.

On one side is José Sarney, the ageing president of the Senate and former President of Brazil, who is mired in corruption allegations and clinging on to power. On the other is a rapidly growing campaign to oust him run by young, educated Brazilians using the internet to mobilise support.

Critics say that Mr Sarney is a symbol of an outdated, corrupt and autocratic system that modern Brazilians are trying to leave behind.

This is a story about our ex-president now president of the senate Jose Sarney (who failed 5 times in controlling hyper-inflation and once shut down all Brazil’s banks) having 13 charges against him behind dropped. These charges included moving about 600 thousand dollars from the gov’t to his foundation and for secretly employing members of his family.

  1. bobbo, don't be a goof says:

He might not have “said” it, but I’m sure JCD meant some Brazilian News that was relevant to the Dvorak readership would be welcomed? Unless the readership in Brazil is being courted.

No, I think he meant items covering how to correctly use Brazilian Bikini Wax or how Mardi Gras should be imported beyond New Orleans.

I think I read a while back that while Brazil was a highly catholic country, the abortion rate was quite high. Maybe that kind of article would be of interest to all groups.

I have to admit, I can’t see foreign news without any connection to USA or Universal Human Rights or “some” connection does strike me as irrelevant. Hope I’m not being too insular.

Why not post the Friday Special at your local Bodega?

  2. pedro says:

Well, next to chavez, he’s a baby

  3. bobbo, don't be a goof says:

What do you think Pedro? Brazilian news items that relate to USA?

Beside abortion, I was amused at how open prostitution was in this catholic country. Don’t know how to make that relevant/connected.

How about comparing the dangers of Statist Vaccination Programs of the USA compared to child outreach programs in Brazil===aka, police squads going into flavelas and shooting the kiddies on sight?

There should be many cross-cultural items of great interest.

  4. Guilherme Cherman says:

#1, Brazil is quite catholic, but it’s more poor than catholic. Many women don’t know how to prevent pregnancy, and when it does happen, the only option for her is abortion.

  5. bobbo, I've heard of that concept says:

“I had no option”===when of course other options existed.

#4–Mr G==and thats why it would be News from Brazil, but relevant.

BTW–don’t tell the Irish about that “no option” argument.

  6. pedro says:

#3 Well, at the current rate of illegal immigrants entering the US, I think that youth outreach program you suggested might need be to be implemented in the US too. There, a US-Brazil conneciton.

  7. Sea Lawyer says:

bobbo, This blog has an international readership and so every story doesn’t necessarily need to have some tie-in to the Good Ol’ US of A ™ .

    Stop being a party-pooper :-P

  8. Laura Secord says:

Typical dumb American, thinking the world revolves around him.

  9. bobbo, I'd love to agree, but can't says:

#6–there ya go Pedro. See, now if we can just get SL and Mr G, or even JCD to see the wisdom of our position.

#7–SL==old Jewish saying: “Whenever given a choice, I say ‘both’” and thats all I’m saying. Just the 80/20 “most competitive” model is what I recommend. As is demonstrated here every week and in politics every day, its not who you appeal to that defines success, its who you alienate that defines your failure.

But I’ve learned to find satisfaction with the suboptimal. It all works for me==although I skipped the link for this post==who could possibly care? And nobody has shown interest==my very point.

  10. Sea Lawyer says:

“its not who you appeal to that defines success, its who you alienate that defines your failure.”

    Ha! I like that a lot. =D

  11. joaoPT says:

So there’s corruption in Brasil !?!?

    Nooooooo…

    [/sarcasm]

  12. bobbo, amazing how close I get says:

    #8–Laura==do you like NASCAR?

  13. bushed says:

Is he a republican? He sounds like one except he’s not been caught yet having butt sex with a young boy, while running on a platform of family values.

  14. Guilherme Cherman says:

#13, he’s a super-leftist, closed all banks when he was president, freezes prices many times. Yet he owns 85% of one state (no joke).

  15. pedro says:

#13 Aaaaaaaahahahahaha, he turned out to be a lefty loon like you. Buuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrnnnnn!

  16. bobbo, now Pedro says:

you gotta admit that Mr G’s intro certainly makes the guy sound like a righty. Steals money, employs family members. Wait, thats every politician.

You’re right. We need more info===of the type bushed was asking for.

I say give him (bushed)a pass.

But this insightful political analysis raises at least another question: Can you be so far left your become right again? Hmmmmm? Canya, canya, canya???

  17. pedro says:

#16 South of the Rio Grande, that’s your typical lefty. In some countries (like Brazil & Argentina), there have been real right winger nuts in government duties. Usually, this extreme righties have surged in response from commnists.

In other countries, like venezuela, there has never been facist right wingers, only moderates lefties, christian centrists and lefty loons (could this be because of the lead in the gasoline?).

The latter is the complete opposite as the US, as you can see. In the US, lefty loons have always been a minority that has never been serious enough to garner traction. Until recently, that is (or at least it has been only recently that I’ve begun noticing)

  18. pfkad says:

Righty, Lefty, Conservative, Liberal, yadda, yadda. How about those who give a damn for the human condition and those who don’t?

  19. pedro says:

#18 You got it. In the and, those are only brands, sports teams. Barely anobody cares for their profession or position, just for theirs & their friends own personal well being and it only gets worse with time. Sad

  20. C.S. says:

18 posts (19 now) and no one blamed the Obama administration yet. It’s like not worth reading the comments anymore ;-)
