Netflix Streaming Coming to PS3

FOSTER CITY, Calif. and LOS GATOS, Calif., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/

Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) and Netflix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX) today announced that they are joining forces to make thousands of movies and TV episodes from Netflix available to be streamed instantly to TVs via the PlayStation®3 (PS3(TM)) computer entertainment system. Netflix expects to begin streaming via the PS3 system next month at no additional cost to Netflix members in the United States who have a PS3 system.

Today’s announcement pairs two of the most popular and fastest growing home entertainment brands in the U.S. The PS3 system’s installed base has reached close to 9 million units in the United States, and Netflix recently reported 11.1 million U.S. subscribers as of September 30.

It’s about time. I’ve been using the PlayOn server with the PS3 to stream Netflix to the TV through my computer.

I’s feel a lot better about it if my DSL connection was a little faster. That way the quality of the Netflix video would be better than 240 by 320.

Comcast isn’t an option here.

Exactly, why is this a business when you’ll have to have comcast anyway?

Netflix should provide broadband for free if you sign up for a high tier service.

If I understood how to create a business, I’d wire homes to my own infrastructure and help people get away from Comcast and DSL. The demand is there, and you have to be able to make money given the outragous fees these guys charge (vis-a-vis eastern Asia).

you don’t need anything from your cable company but for Internet. It is $40 for the 3mb tier and $60 for the 8mb tier. After that you don’t need any video or phone services.

If you can’t afford that, you spend all your time at your second job and can meet all you video needs with netflix, blockbuster or the one dollar video kiosk.

Broadcast, is going the way of newspapers, and buggy wheel makers.

I’m not much for streaming, but I oh so love my WDTV. It beats any 400-disc player on the market.

Naturally, PS3 owners outside the U.S. won’t be able to use the service.

You are joking, right? Do you even know what broadcast means in terms of media? Tell me… which is your favourite news program or sports broadcast on Netflixx?

Blu-ray is not going anywhere for sometime. Until you can stream 1080p without issue, many videofials will continue to rent blu-ray. Heck the stream I believe is 720p not even 1080i. I love the thought of streaming but still will rent certain movies on bluray.

Blu ray is amazing. Beam that thing with my 1080p triple lcd projector to 120″ inches & you’re in home cinema nirvana.

#6 As always, everyone outside the US is effed up. Any good proxy fast enough for streaming & compatible with the ps3 network?

This is perfect if you don’t have a bandwidth cap and a descent connection. Say good bye to brick and mortar DVD rental places and Apple’s little side project the AppleTV.

I have DSL with about 2.5Mbits down. My Roku box interface to Netflix is telling me that I’m getting the best quality that they serve, which is indicated with four dots. It really isn’t very good. It’s not jerky but the resolution looks about like standard def TV. Not even close to DVD quality.

It would be nice if Netflix on the PS3 with it’s hard disk could cache higher quality files for a few movies at the top of my OnDemand list. I’d like that.
