John Safran is occasionally brilliant, sometimes though his stuff is just a big ‘meh…’.

This time however he hit the nail on the head.

this is so fucking ridiculous, but kind of true. A jewish friend of mine said his mother once told him that he was finishing the work Hitler started by dating gentiles. I thought the my catholic upbringing gave me guilt, but we have nothing to match that.

I think Safran subscribes to the Mel Brooks theory that the Holocaust was something so truly hideous that the only way to approach the subject is with humour.

This is another Safran classic from a previous show themed around religion. Possibly more suited for work.

Having lived in Israel, I now know that being Jewish has nothing to do with hating the Palestinians. Palestinians are hated because they are culturally distinct. The situation is much like the racist whites of the South hating black people. The average black person in the South just tries to live their lives and make their way, and along comes some crazy white racists with the idea that the black person needs to be lynched.

Israel is somewhat similar. Except that the Palestinians throw rocks, and occationally a nut case (like McVeigh) blows up some people or fires some small rockets. And yes, I’ve been on the receiving end of a rocket attack.

Whatever. I’m glad I don’t have a dog in that fight.

People really get off on hating other people. I’m trying to change my own behavior with this regard.

I also no longer think of ‘Jewish’ as a race. A race is a group that can be distinguished from other people based on the expression of genes which manifest common features. Israeli Jews are too diverse to be able to tell if someone is Jewish, or only pretending to be Jewish in order to live as an Israeli. Again, I don’t care one way or the other.

John Safran is very talented. I love his work because it challenges me. Sometimes he really annoys me, he always makes me laugh (which is increasingly difficult the older I get) and he uses humour for it’s highest purpose, cutting through the crap, taking you off guard and illuminating hypocrisy. He has been active on Australian television since winning a documentary competition on one of the national television channel’s ABC in the late 90’s.

Tonight, black-face in Chicago (I am already cringing).

I agree (mostly). I always thought South Africa was a better analogy but the point is the same. Jews (racially) are practically the same as the Palestinians (all Semites) the rest are European cultural / religious Jews. Some (orthodox I believe) think you are only Jewish if your mother is (which sort of proves it is not really a race if you exclude the children of Jewish men). Either way I think of race as a pseudoscientific description (especially if we are all Africans) and breed would be more appropriate. As long as everyone can make babies with everyone else we are really only talking about cultural divisions (which are not insignificant).

My point is, the most extreme Israelis believe it is a race (of the chosen people) and it is a reality whether it makes sense or not.

Enter John Safran to solve the problem (point out the ‘idiocracy’).

The problem is that people are confusing ethnicity and race.

Semites are an ethnic group.
Homo-Sapien Sapiens is a race.

There is only ONE race on this planet. The idea of a multi-racial world is 19th century and has been proven to be poor science.
