The sale of Adolf Hitler’s family home in the Austrian town of Braunau am Inn has triggered concern that it could become a shrine for Nazi sympathisers.

The unassuming house where Hitler was born in 1889 has been put on the market priced at 2.2m euros (£1.9m; $3.3m). Residents and local politicians fear that the property could fall into the hands of far-right extremists.

Braunau’s mayor Gerhard Skiba wants to prevent that happening, but the council does not have the funds to buy it. The building is currently used by an organisation helping the disabled and has at various times in its history housed a library, bank and technical institute. Some historians have suggested turning the building into a museum.

However Mr Skiba vigorously opposes the idea, saying it would encourage people from all over the world to visit the site. For the time being, the only reminder of the building’s infamous past is a small memorial dedicated to the victims of the Nazis.

It’s been rumored that Dick Cheney has made an offer.

  1. Animby says:

Jeez, Fusion! Did Cheney shoot you in the face or something? Maybe you shouldn’t have given him the bird…

McCullough – Using a Hitler story to get your snide remarks in about Cheney is over the top. You got yourself a Dem prez and Congress and nothing – I say NOTHING – has changed except it’s all gotten worse. The Repub’s Cheney has been replaced with the Dem’s Emmanuel while our leader stutter about what to do in the war instead of making decisions. Meanwhile, the country is going to hell in a handbasket and my granddaughter’s grandkids will be paying off Obama’s debt for us. And probably learning to speak Chinese.

It’s time to stop harping on the past and get on with the future.

  2. liberalbutsickofthisshit says:

McCullough, you are so lame and pointless.
Enough with the billionth Hitler-Cheney comparisons, have you not noticed that your new guy is failing bigtime and seems perfectly happy to continue the evil things Cheney did?

Bush and Cheney still rule your lives. You will never be able to get on with life. That means they win.

  3. honeyman says:

I don’t think McCullough was actually comparing Cheney to Hitler. He merely pointed out that Cheney, an evil doer of some notoriety himself, may be interested in collecting more evil doer memorabilia. I believe Cheney is already the proud owner of one of Genghis Khan’s testicles and the codpiece that Napoleon wore during the conquest of Cairo in 1798.

  4. deowll says:

“It’s been rumored that Dick Cheney has made an offer.”

    And you started it.

  5. McCullough says:

Let me know when you morons get weary of the “divide and conquer” tactic, aka left/right paradigm that so easily distracts you. Maybe when you guys get tired of fighting each other, we can stand together and get something done. Until then, I just have to laugh.

  6. nolimit662 says:

McCullough is exactly right. They only use left/right and republican/democrat to divide us. Divided we are weaker. They only want us to believe it matters who we vote for. But the truth is no matter which side is in power, the agenda is the same, and that agenda marches on until we find some third party not yet corrupted into this agenda.

  7. Jerry says:

#19 Arianne – Are you sure you’re name isn’t spelled “Aryan?” That house should have been demolished years ago. For all the deaths that one man caused.

  8. Brian Hill says:

No Thanks! I will never buy Hitlers home. I am not a fan of that Rothschild, Rockefeller, exploitative genocidal maniac!

  9. amodedoma says:

I’d like to buy it to turn it into a hotel for homosexuals only.

  10. Hi says:

What a paradox. Here we have the whole world all for capitalism and freedom, which in it’s best form then allows many different people or organizations a chance to buy the house, including those who worship God and Hitler. Then we have a governor who wishes he had Hitler like power to make sure it doesn’t get into the wrong hands, using any tactics he can legally find to coerce and manipulate the situation, much like Hitler, basically in order to protect everyone from studying history.

  11. chuck says:

oh come on, mccollugh. dick cheney and hitler in the same sentence? im not a big fan of hitler, but thats a tad bit over the line…..

  12. Mr. Fusion says:

I don’t think it should be demolished. It is a significant historical building and all such buildings should be preserved.

Even if the building was demolished, the wing nuts would still show up to pay homage.

  13. mcsquash says:

I think they should make it a Jewish community center.

    Fitting

  14. JasonNothing says:

Id buy it, then Id burn that fucker down.

  15. woody says:

Hitler’s Germany had a great economy. If we could follow the economic policy of national socialist Germany, a bunch of jews would start complaining that they were being put to death. Hitler would say Arbeit macht frei. Jews would say death, work, whats the difference.

    Cheney just sucks jewish dick.
