Dear President Obama,

Do you really want to be the new “war president”? If you go to West Point tomorrow night (Tuesday, 8pm) and announce that you are increasing, rather than withdrawing, the troops in Afghanistan, you are the new war president. Pure and simple. And with that you will do the worst possible thing you could do — destroy the hopes and dreams so many millions have placed in you. With just one speech tomorrow night you will turn a multitude of young people who were the backbone of your campaign into disillusioned cynics. You will teach them what they’ve always heard is true — that all politicians are alike. I simply can’t believe you’re about to do what they say you are going to do. Please say it isn’t so.

It is not your job to do what the generals tell you to do. We are a civilian-run government. WE tell the Joint Chiefs what to do, not the other way around. That’s the way General Washington insisted it must be. That’s what President Truman told General MacArthur when MacArthur wanted to invade China. “You’re fired!,” said Truman, and that was that. And you should have fired Gen. McChrystal when he went to the press to preempt you, telling the press what YOU had to do. Let me be blunt: We love our kids in the armed services, but we f*#&in’ hate these generals, from Westmoreland in Vietnam to, yes, even Colin Powell for lying to the UN with his made-up drawings of WMD (he has since sought redemption).

So now you feel backed into a corner. 30 years ago this past Thursday (Thanksgiving) the Soviet generals had a cool idea — “Let’s invade Afghanistan!” Well, that turned out to be the final nail in the USSR coffin.

  1. Thinker says:

Looks like Mr. Moore needs a new axe to grind. Honestly, does he think he’s uncovering something new? Is he completely unencumbered by reality? Perhaps he’d also like to call on Tiger Woods to ‘Come clean’ as well…

  2. Me-Mongo says:

    #1
    . . .but he’s right.

  3. The Monster's Lawyer says:

#1 Stinker – What are you trying to get at? What does Moore’s letter have to do with Wood’s “Coming clean”?

  4. Father says:

No one in the millitary ever is promoted to a higher rank for being a “dove”.

  5. Breetai says:

    heh,

If Obama was reeeally in Afghanistan for the reasons he stated…. WHERE THE FUCK IS BIN LADIN?!

That piece of shit Obama is lying to you.

  6. jbellies says:

The movie version will be entitled:
    “Back to Baracks”
(army back to barracks get it ha ha ha).

  7. Phydeau says:

I’ve never seen his movies so I don’t know anything about his politics first-hand, but this letter is spot-on. Graveyard of Empires. Think about it. Our economy is cratering and we’re spending billions chasing a few potential terrorists around the same mountains that defeated the British and Soviet empires.

Did we learn nothing from their failures? Did we learn nothing from our failure in Vietnam?

Stop the insane idea that men with guns can reorganize a nation that doesn’t even function as a nation and never, ever has.

    Well said!

  8. MrNatural says:

Why does this fat fuck think anything he has to say will influence BHO, who’s mind is no doubt made up-whatever it is.
Let’s get the poppy harvest in and processed and start making some real money the American way.
Besides, MM is reputedly on the White House guest list. Why doesn’t he just send a blackberry to the prez?

  9. jescott418 says:

The reality has always been a politician is a politician. I think Michael Moore is the one who thniks Utopia exsists. Hey, its part of the stimulus. Just look at how much equipment that keeps getting blown up. That job security for those building those trucks! Sad but true.
Do not for a second believe that the politicians don’t look at war as a job maker.

  10. t0llyb0ng says:

The boys ain’t comin’ home & Brocko will turn into LBJ before our eyes.

Granted, some o’ you youths be too young to remember LBJ. Wish I could forget.

  11. Bob says:

Poor Michael Moore, he has been in a slump ever since Bush left office. After all its hard to blame everything on a guy who isn’t their any more.

  12. Phydeau says:

#11 Uh, Earth to Bob… the letter is to Obama, not Bush. He’s criticizing Obama, not Bush. You’re the one who brought up Bush. Try thinking next time.

  13. Sammy Boy says:

    Breetai,

How the fuck would Obama know why the hell the U.S. is in Afghanistan? To understand that, we’d have to drag those motherfuckers who put us there in from God-knows where they are hiding and get them to tell us. Where is Cheney? Where is Rumsfeld? Where is Paul Wolfowitz? Where is Richard Perle? Kagan? ……

You fucking stupid short-term memory fuck-heads make me laugh. You want to blame Obama for shit – great there’s stuff to blame him for, but at least TRY AND GET YOUR FUCKING FACTS STRAIGHT and blame him for stuff that is actually his fault you dumb cocksucker.

  14. David says:

This is where Obama’s support on the left finally collapses. A recent Research 2000 poll shows 40% of Democrats “not likely” or will “definitely” not vote in 2010. We are looking at a one term president here if the Republicans can actually come up with a decent candidate in 2012.

  15. Dennis says:

We can’t leave, and we shouldn’t stay.

If we leave, then the Pipeline that the Corporations built will be taken, and they already spent the money on the people and tools and materials to build it.

If we stay, he ‘risks’ an upcoming election in 3 years.

Corporations are more important in this country than reputations.
Always easier to ask forgiveness than permissions.

  16. Troublemaker says:

Historically, crumbling empire tend to start lashing out with their military might just before the end, as a last ditch effort to exert their power. The US is no different in this respect.

  17. Rufus says:

Can you say kakistrocracy? It’s rule by the worst people.

  18. BigBoyBC says:

WHAT HAPPEND TO THE MODERATORS ON THIS SITE?

    [What’s the problem? – ed.]

  19. SparkyOne says:

I doubt that he really “appeals” to anyone.

  20. Faxon says:

    Mikey Moore:
I hope to outlive you, (it should be simple, considering you are an overweight slob), and will dance on your grave.
    Pig.

  21. Ranger007 says:

#7 said “Did we learn nothing from their failures? Did we learn nothing from our failure in Vietnam?”

Clearly we didn’t, but the question should be, “Why didn’t we?” Money? Shame on us.

#10 said “Granted, some o’ you youths be too young to remember LBJ. Wish I could forget.”

    Me too!

#14 said “We are looking at a one term president here if the Republicans can actually come up with a decent candidate in 2012.”

Won’t happen. Look at the recent candidates.
Bush against Kerry — 2 losers
Obama (or even Billary) against McCain — ditto.

    These are the final days.

  22. Thinker says:

#2 Mongo — No he’s not right, he’s looking at things like a 7 year old.

#3 Lawyer — Moore’s stupid letter is just grabbing headlines for himself. Much like the Mark Kriegel Column today about Tiger Woods.
    http://msn.foxsports.com/golf/story/10452288/The-key-Tiger-question:-Do-you-believe-him?GT1=39002

Its like someone needed content for the daily deadline, or had to fulfil their contract and this is what they came up with.

Sucks to be a slave to the man.

  23. Phydeau says:

#19 Faxon the wingnut is confused. One person he hates (Moore) is criticizing another person he hates (Obama). As this confuses his poor little wingnut brain, he reaches down into the lizard part and vomits out a generic insult to one of them.

Faxon, you’re excused from commenting on this topic any more, it’s obviously beyond your mental capacity. Your pointy little wingnut head won’t hurt so much if you just move on. No need to thank me. 🙂

  24. bobbo, a student of history says:

    Heh, heh.

OF COURSE the problem and consequences to all the “nothing but bad” options Obama is facing is MUCH MORE COMPLICATED than what the 50% correct letter of Michael Moore would suggest.

Still, Moore is SO RIGHT in his advice to Obama==regardless of what platform Obama ran on. I think “foreign entanglements” 7000 miles from home while the economy is tanking, has been the graveyard of empires wherever and whenever situated.

Not until now have I focused on just how telling this decision will be. I think Obama will send a fraction of the troops requested. He will kill our volunteer/mercenary force to keep the more powerful money interests in America placated rather than actually deal with the issues and threats. Like our jobs program.

  25. ROB WEST says:

I agree with Michael Moore on this and would have never have voted for Obama if had not promised to end the war.
    It’s all very sad.

  26. bobbo, a student of history says:

#24–BobWest==Obama SAID just the opposite. Iraq was BAD, Afghanistan was Good and needed to be finished.

I thought he was lying at the time to not get labeled a Democratic Backboneless Liberal Softie. Turns out I was wrong but at least I’m not remembering history as incorrectly as you are.

  27. BigBoyBC says:

    MODERATOR: Read #13 – Profanity

I’m usually tollerant, but this guy crossed the line.

  28. Jetfire says:

    #13 Sammy Boy
“How the fuck would Obama know why the hell the U.S. is in Afghanistan?”

Obama said we should be in Afghanistan and needed more troops there to while running for President. He said we shouldn’t be in Iraq and the Iraq war was taking resources away from Afghanistan. Heck I hate the guy and didn’t vote for him but I even remember that. So you can’t say he was against the war in Afghanistan.

  29. Tim says:

Where is Cindy Sheehan? She should be protesting out in front of Obama’s home soon.

  30. McCullough says:

#25, boboo- I think his camaign promise was “If I’m elected president, The very first thing I will do is bring home the troops. You can take that to your (failed) bank.”

I believe, like yourself he was talking about Iraq, but it’s a moot point since he hasn’t kept that promise either.
