Confidential intelligence documents obtained by The Times show that Iran is working on testing a key final component of a nuclear bomb.

The notes, from Iran’s most sensitive military nuclear project, describe a four-year plan to test a neutron initiator, the component of a nuclear bomb that triggers an explosion. Foreign intelligence agencies date them to early 2007, four years after Iran was thought to have suspended its weapons programme.

An Asian intelligence source last week confirmed to The Times that his country also believed that weapons work was being carried out as recently as 2007 — specifically, work on a neutron initiator.

The technical document describes the use of a neutron source, uranium deuteride, which independent experts confirm has no possible civilian or military use other than in a nuclear weapon. Uranium deuteride is the material used in Pakistan’s bomb, from where Iran obtained its blueprint.

“Although Iran might claim that this work is for civil purposes, there is no civil application,” said David Albright, a physicist and president of the Institute for Science and International Security in Washington, which has analysed hundreds of pages of documents related to the Iranian programme. “This is a very strong indicator of weapons work.”

#21 Funny, I can’t help but laugh at you.

#24 I see you still are a long way from getting smart.

#33 Is there a Repugblican president today? That’d explain the policy continuation. You’re very smart.

#36 If you read moron #35, there’ll never be enough proof.

#40 & #41 Riiight. Are both your basements comfy & cozy? Sorry senile, I know is an adjustable bed in your case.

  3. Glenn E. says:

Seems to me that the Israelis had the BOMB, long before any of the Arab countries did. And hardly anyone screamed when this fact became known. So why do you think Iran feels threatened enough to want to develop its own Nukes? With the Israeli armed forces waiting for some excuse to toss one over at them? It’s always Ok, for those who had them first, to have them. And the friends of those that had them first to have them. And for whoever lobbies the the hell out of the governing body, of whoever had them first (and their friends), to have them. But just don’t anyone else feel the need to join the nuclear bomb club, without the permission of those who had them first.

And BTW, for anyone to have nuclear weapons, is insane. It cost billions to develop and make the things. And billions to maintain and protect them. And all this for a weapon nobody really wants to use. EVER! So why make them in the first place? Just because someone else is dump enough to throw their money away to make one or two themselves. Ok, so we’ll beat their stupidity and make hundreds of them. And when somebody else feels threatened by this and makes hundreds of nukes. We’ll make thousands! Not that we ever plan to use a single one of them. But somehow having thousands of them, makes us safer than having only hundreds of them. It certainly makes somebody richer. Those who don’t believe a nuclear war will ever come, that ends their life of opulence.

  4. Toxic Asshead says:

Why is it that libs are willing to give up everything in life that’s good in the name of global warming, but are afraid of something comparatively trivial like nuclear war? Let ‘em launch. We respond by nuking the entire country to glass. Problem solved.

Hell, if you really believe in global warming then you should welcome nuclear winter as a counterbalance.

  5. Dallas says:

#44 Asshead, why say libs will give up everything in life in the name of global warming. WTF is possibly happening in that skull of yours that gets you to that conclusion?

As far as “we respond by nuking entire country,..blah blah”… Now THAT I believe defines the republican views of the world.

It’s OK for a schmuck like you to think that but the scary thought is having leadership that leads with that line of thinking.

Imagine a Dick Cheney in charge of the White house during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Now THAT is the closest to divine intervention I’ve ever heard of.
