A little-known Republican upended the balance of power in Washington by winning a U.S. Senate seat in Massachusetts, a result that imperils President Barack Obama’s top legislative priorities and augurs trouble for his party in this year’s elections.

With 75% of the vote counted, Republican Scott Brown was leading his opponent, Massachusetts’ Democratic Attorney General Martha Coakley 52.7% to 46.3%, according to the Associated Press, which declared Mr. Brown the winner.

The Brown victory forces the White House and Congressional leaders into a mad scramble to decide how—or whether—to salvage their long-sought health-care overhaul. Rushing the bill after losing Massachusetts carries political risks. So does allowing it to collapse.

#54 Repeating myself today with this line, but what the heck. Here goes: Aaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahaha

Yes, little pedro, your guy won today. Good for you. So as a reward, for today only, you and your wingnut buddies can say what you really think.

And then tomorrow, you have to go back to pretending you despise the Democrats and Republicans equally.

    Have fun. :)

  2. smartalix says:

Considering that Massachussets has better state-mandated health care than what is in the bill, I think there are quite a few idiots in this issue on both sides. Morons.

yes it is in Mass. where Dems outnumber Rep. 3 to 1.

120k votes more for Brown is sending a message to Washington. The problem is that they won’t hear it with their heads buried in the sand

  5. MikeN says:

So abortion extremism cost the Democrats a Senate seat and millions of dollars they could have used in other races this year.

Or perhaps Coakley won because she started her campaign 6 months before Kennedy died, and was ready to go at his funeral.

  6. Phydeau says:

#64 Coakley was up 30 points after the primary and decided she didn’t have to campaign. Whoops.

  7. pedro says:

#60 My guy? I couldn’t care less for him. If you haven’t noticed, I already called him the male Palin. But seeing the sheeple like you here twitch and groan is so hilarious…

  8. Phydeau says:

#66 little pedro, I’ll believe your touching little story when you attack a Republican with the same viciousness as you attack the Democrats.

Until then, you’re just another transparently obvious right-wing nut. Why do you even bother to pretend? I guess that question is best left to your therapist. Maybe you can work on it while you’re processing your grief over your failed god Dubya. :)

  9. rcapote says:

THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN. We do not want all of this massive spending. We do not want universal health care. We do not want corrupted Chicago style politics in our government. We do not want government to grow. We want RESPONSIBILITY when it comes to how the government uses OUR money.

The people have spoken. If you want your universal health care, go move to France or Canada. If you want socialism go move to Sweden. Do not mess with the only country with freedom and liberty left on the planet.

  10. pedro says:

#67 Whatever gets you thru the night. I know it’s a really though time for sheeple like you, so the reality avoidance is understood. Just so you know, it’s not good for your mental health to hang onto that technique for too long.

  11. Phydeau says:

#69 Thanks little pedro. :) Now, there’s Democrats out there for you to bash, random people to call “sheeple”, and above all constantly remind us of how smart and impartial you are. ;)

  12. The0ne says:

Need I remind everyone that DU posted a clip from the Daily Show about this. Stewart even as far as to explain how this affects the “balance” of power issue.

If you haven’t seen the clip yet, go see it BEFORE posting. A waste of time if you don’t do it.

  13. bill says:

There’s that big ‘flushing sound’ again!

  14. Benjamin says:

I pointed out that she lost because of how she handled the Amirault case: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704281204575003341640657862.html

She knew they could possibly be guilty, yet she did everything in her power to keep them in prison.

  15. Benjamin says:

Should be “couldn’t possibly be guilty.”

  16. Howard Beale says:

Up by 30 points its in the bag
    Coakley pulls a Hillary ouch!

Oh well the Healthcare Bill is so watered down now its just a placebo. The insurance companies and their Republican allies have managed to block all cost accountability measures. At this point Ted would be thinking we have let this Lobster turn into a Carp with the time-honored Democratic tradition of making concessions because we can never get our act together.

Republicans can rest easer; their fears that it just might work have been put on hold for another 20 or 30 years.

  17. MikeN says:

#65, that’s my point. Any other primary winner would have won.

Instead, because of abortion extremism and her campaigning at Teddy’s funeral, she won the primary.

Next time, just bring back ESPN’s 2 minute drill and quiz the candidates.

    Ha! F__king Brilliant!

It’s funny because it’s so true.
