  1. nlnnet says:

I fail to see ANY info about how the info was collected. Wondering 3 things:

    * does John Dvorak control his site
    * why does he allow post without references to actual data if he does
    * if No Agenda is actually without agenda

[I lost control of the site years ago. The data sources are clearly shown. No Agenda is the name of the show. Like One Hour Cleaners (ref. Bonzo Dog Do-Dah Band). We have an agenda. A simple formula. We go out and hit people in the mouth. (with the truth!) -- jcd]

  2. Uncle Dave says:

    #20:

    * It’s John’s site, but we editors do most of the posting.
    * So all the links under the chart aren’t references? Or did you not click to embiggen?
    * Depends on your definition of agenda.

  3. atmusky says:

    #20 Really? No references?

    Did you actually look?

Try again – where the info came from is listed at the bottom of the chart.

  4. srgothard says:

I think the moral of the story is if your religious, move to North Dakota, and in either case, avoid Vermont.

  5. bumrocky says:

This should be turned around to Impoverished. Most of the negatives on this chart have been, and can be related to poverty levels. So, re-rank by poverty, and draw the same conclusions. The more impoverished, the more likely you are to be religious, because you have nothing else to get you through life. You’re also more likely to be uneducated (lower IQ scores), and less content in your life, and more apt to theft to get by…get real.

  6. Dr Dodd says:

Must be time to toss out a little red meat to the lions.

It’s always interesting to see what extremes liberals must go to stroke their disturbing sense of false superiority.

  7. qb says:

Hmmmm. All those happy, smart, prosperous states are close to Canada. Coincidence? I think not. ;-)

  8. the haunted sheep says:

What a load of crap. From the pulled the numbers out of their ass dept.

  9. Dr Dodd says:

Have we learned nothing about false data from the socialist global warming debacle?

It seems propaganda is a liberal’s best friend… that would be lying to those with an IQ below 100.

  10. I would love to see this chart include illegal aliens, education levels, children per household/birthrate etc. The California IQ is disturbing. Outside of Mississippi, we are the dumbest state in the country (tied with Alabama) and one of the most liberal and least religious. We’re just plain dumb. Maybe is the UC system would actually educate Californians rather than the Chinese nationals, it would help.

Also there needs to be normalization of the numbering scheme. One column the lower number is better, in another column the higher number is better (or worse depending on whether you think something is good or bad). Thus some confusion in interpreting the thing.

All these numbers make sense if you’ve actually traveled throughout the country.

  11. Dallas says:

There is clear correlation between yahoo/backward states versus fanatical religious demographics.

I love Texas but was expecting Texas to be higher on the list.

WOW. By comparison, Mississippi must be a fucking monastery.

  12. JScott says:

Yea, and we can probably see a pattern of low IQ of the idiots that comment about missing sources and missing collection methods when the information is clearly given on the bottom of the graph. What morons.

  13. Special Ed says:

Isn’t it ironic, the religious folks here that couldn’t find the sources of the chart and suggesting that the numbers were somehow “pulled out of their ass?”

    Should we explain “embiggen?”

  14. Loupe Garou says:

So religion is the driver of the other measures? Why not put air pollution on it and relate it to religion?

It would be neat to see a cube of this over time with the other dimensions John mentioned.

  15. Special Ed says:

#34 – I can see where you could relate a lot of evangelists to hot air.

  16. JScott says:

    Special Ed,

You said a mouth full there pal. Please read link number 2 in my post above. I gave reputable sources when I wrote that. 90% of the responses I got were via twitter saying it was propaganda! No one wanted to go on the record on the site because they could only fire blanks in response. They are doing the same thing here.

There was a story on NBC yesterday about how Fox News is number one with 80% of conservatives saying they trusted no one else to provide news. Conversely 60% of liberals say the like MSNBC but only 32% said they they trust them exclusively. You can see that almost 3 times as many conservatives are confident in using only one source for news. Liberals tend to vary their news sources, are less likely to choose a source because it does not challenge their belief system, and so are not so gullible.

    [begin rant]
Think about it. Why call it “news” if it’s always predictable? News should challenge you because some of the things you hear in it are NEW!

BTW: JCD, why are there so few journalists willing to challenge the falsehoods cranking out of Fox? Regardless a person’s politics, that can’t possibly sit well in context of journalism ethics or any journalist that takes their fiduciary seriously.
    [end rant]

  17. chris says:

#25 You could change around the columns if you want, but it would still have the same information in it. It’s just a table and doesn’t make a causal case about religion.

JCD, I think California’s problem is that it should be at least two states. Same deal with stupor-size companies. Anything that big isn’t coherent.

  18. Skeptic says:

#27, qb… Hmmmm. All those happy, smart, prosperous states are close to Canada. Coincidence? I think not. “

Thank you for saying that qb. I would also like to thank all the northern states who are being such nice neighbours to us, and if you are ever in Southern Ontario, please come to dinner. We won’t say grace, and we won’t say it in both official languages. We love you.

  19. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

#36 JScott, you seem to have a problem with Fox News. The next thing we know, you’ll probably even be challenging Brit Hume’s extremely wise advice a couple of weeks ago that Tiger Woods should abandon Buddhism for Christianity because of the extra forgiveness and redemption it offers over Buddhism. Be careful about attacking the Lord’s messengers.

Incidentally, Hume forgot to mention that for a limited time only, new converts can get a double forgiveness bonus if they mention Fox News in their prayer.

  20. JScott says:

Gary, the dangerous infidel said, “Be careful about attacking the Lord’s messengers.”

Well, I think it’s about time that “the Lord” becomes a bit more discriminating on who his messengers are. Seems every “messenger” wants to tell others how they should live their lives without considering “the mote in thine own eye.”
