Perhaps we haven’t learned everything about the iPad just yet. Could an iPad with a camera be in the near future?

Mission Repair, a company that fixes broken Apple products, apparently got their hands on some iPad parts. Their pictures showed off the internal frame, which curiously enough has a small hole on the top.

When the Mission Repair team took a camera out of a MacBook and placed it inside the iPad’s top hole, it fit right in. You can see a comparison of the MacBook camera and the iPad slot in the image above.

Now if they’ll just add Flash capabilities, memory slot, USB port, etc., etc.

The iPad is an excellent device for surfing the web while you sit on the john. Other than that…

  2. Dallas says:

#20 True but also a great couch potato surfing device. I use my ipod touch now and could see where a larger screen would be pretty nice to have.

I think the key to success is great content – like magazine and newspaper formatted for that screen size with added multimedia.

It’s funny how people unequivocally endorse or vehemently oppose a device no one yet owns.

  4. Ah_Yea says:

I must really be out of the loop here. I don’t see any real advantages of the Ipad over a netbook, except to read a website, interactive book, or games.

Website without Flash? $600 buys a lot of books… PSP…

$400 can get you an excellent netbook with a webcam, keyboard, etc.

It’s just not as Apple cool.

  5. Ah_Yea says:

Here’s just a random example, pulled off the web.

So how is the Ipad that much better at %50 extra expense?

  6. qb says:

    Ah_Yea said “Website without Flash?”

You’re saying that like it’s a bad thing.

  7. honeyman says:

I think it is prudent at this stage to adopt a wait and see approach on the iPad and not fall into the media trap of endless speculation and hyperbole based on its own hyperbole and speculation.

Having said that I was a bit under-whelmed by what I’ve seen so far.

  8. MikeN says:

Cringely posted a report from a beta tester. It has a camera front and back.

  9. qb says:

    # 27 honeyman Endless speculation and emotional outbursts are the things that make IT a science.

  10. Father says:

I would like to know if the regulars here, who think Flash is optional, ever read DU on a nonFlash enabled device?

About 1/3 (or more) of videos posted here REQUIRE flash, as well as lots of other media I can’t see.

That said, the ipad would have had some sizzle for me if it could be docked into a netbook, like that device at CES. Why didn’t apple think of that???

  11. Dallas says:

    #25. Awful example.
You show something twice as thick, over 200# heavier, twice the energy consumption and a clamshell formfactor?

You’re out of touch with the target market that tablets are for.

  12. ChuckM says:

Of course it is going to have a camera, apple knows this and they are just going to throw a bone later on.

Personally, I think they should to make it a high resolution camera, so that you can capture paper documents, or scan magaize barcodes, etc…

Go to the magazine shop, scan, pay and voila, I have the magazine on my iPad. Technically, they should have it on the other side, or here’s an idea… both sides! Wow… imagine that… what innovation.

#31… I think his point was, that’s a ton of features for a fraction of the cost of an iPad.

I think the iPad will be a consumption device, much like the iPhone, Touch, etc… yes you can do stuff, but really, it’s for mass consumption of content and media… it all boils down to iTunes on bigger screen. It all comes back to iTunes/AppStore/BookStore.

  13. f_w says:

It will not be a whole year between the new releases.
Keeping the buzz up and demand too, i foresee (pulling the number out of my behind) that it will take no more then 6 to 8 months.

Some things like that camera is soo easy that it might be sooner, as so many was underwhelmed by the current one.

Then again a simple software upgrade for some added functionality may be even more attractive if they where willing to do it, just to keep the buzz up.(if it is that easy)

It also depends on what they have in the pipeline.
If they have a crapload of these 1.0 buggers the will to release new versions may be less.

  14. qb says:

Father said “About 1/3 (or more) of videos posted here REQUIRE flash, as well as lots of other media I can’t see.”

Sad isn’t it? Or you can go to the YouTube HTML5 site. Or you can install an add-on to your browser and only load the Flash that you choose.

  15. Ah_Yea says:

    That’s it!

    “iTunes on bigger screen.”

    Ok, now it makes sense.

#16 Dullas gets the Loyal Sheeple Award.

#17 god is a macfan and a sheeple. I know you have the trifecta, so I’ll get back to on the missing one.

    #22 I forgot you’re a macfan too. Figures. Once a sheeple, always a sheeple.

#31 said: “You’re out of touch with the target market that tablets are for.”

Remarkable comment from someone so detached from reality.

  17. JScott says:

This is what Leo Laporte is always talking about. Apple is always looking for the up-sell. 90% of geeks are rational and analytical (that’s what makes us geeks) and carefully weigh options and specs before buying. I always picture Steve Jobs holding fanboys upside down by their pockets and shaking them until cash stops falling out.

Fanboys just buy for coolness and don’t mind living in Apple’s walled garden. Steve Jobs knew when he sold the original iphone for 500 bucks that there would soon be an upgrade and that fanboys would moan about having to buy another one but that they would do it anyway. They did. He knew that if he introduced a 4GB ipod followed by a 16 or whatever, lots of them would moan about having to upgrade but that they would do it anyway. They did. He knew they would moan about his renewing the exclusive deal with AT&T but will still upgrade to the 3G. They did. He knows that if he releases a max….I mean ipad without a camera now and one with a camera in 6 months, that fanboys will moan about it and then will buy one anyway. They will.

Apple screws its fanboys so often because Steve knows that residents of any walled-garden are…captives. You can milk them all you want and they ain’t goin’ nowhere. They won’t.

  18. Animby says:

JScott #37 – Upsell? I own one piece of Apple gear: an Airport. I bought here in Thailand and they included a power cord for … UK! They offered to sell me the right power cord for another $22!!!

As for the iPad … as my granddaddy used to say: Put a camera on a piece of crap and you’ve got a piece of crap that takes pictures.

Actually, I hope Apple’s iPad is very successful. If it is, it will spur development of better gear. At better prices.

  19. Dallas says:

#37 Apple? The whole tech industry is built around selling up to the next best thing.

As far as walled gardens go, I agree the handheld market is largely walled versus the PC market. I suppose there is a large market for ease of use and simplicity.

#36 Predrito, a tablet is not right for you but rather a netbook or something with a keyboard. Navigating a touch input tablet while on a donkey is likely very hard to do. You should comment better on the comet thing.

  20. pedro says:

#39 A proud sheeple showing why macfans are amongts the lowest forms of life. Good for you! Now, go lick Jobs’ floor.
