In a fitting climax to this story, the Chief of Police of Rahway and Sgt. Sforza were invited to the grand re-opening of a wing of the Louvre in Paris this morning, where they were asked to unveil the recently cleaned statue of Venus Di Milo, and then were pelted by the attending crowd and press with tangerines and sarcasm.

#14: True, I am aware of that as well, however, the Puritan Fathers made sure that we weren’t so enlightened here in the good ole U.S. of A. as they were in Ancient Greece…times and tastes have changed just a smidge in the last couple thousand years…

#8/#9 above, I second your sentiments. Some people are prudish, true, but they also seem to be forgetting that freedom OF speech does NOT mean freedom FROM speech (nor of religion, for that matter!). If I want to do up a tribute to the Great Masters on my front lawn (tough to do in snow down here in the Phoenix metro), I have every right to do so. This is no different than installing a plaster statue or fountain of the Venus on my front lawn. It’s ART, and perfectly acceptable. Just because the neighbors can’t control their sexual demons doesn’t give them the right to dictate what I have on my property.
Now, if the statue was modified by adding flesh tones, obvious nipples, or pubic hair, I could understand the neighbors being upset, much as the neighbors were upset in Beverly Hills many years ago when a Saudi ‘prince’ had all the nude statues atop the wall of his compound painted in a ‘lifelike’ manner. Still, the difference between art and smut is many times in the eye of the beholder.
I think neighbors like those of the Conneran’s need to seek counseling over their obvious sexual hangups.
