Bah, Humbug! Fear tactics are older than humanity. Monkeys have been seen giving the signal for the approach of a predator to make a fellow monkey drop a particularly nice piece of food so it can be swiped. It's part of our primate heritage.

# 6 honeyman:

And that's the real news value in this story.

<b>"... Seventy members of congress state that they belong to the DSA or Democratic Socialists of America. [...]"</b>

70? 56? 83? 76?

I am skeptical. I tried to look this up, but the only places that even mention this are Far Right sites ("Demoncrats want to Destroy America and Eat Your Babies!!!!!!!") and they all disagree on the numbers (a strong sign of BS). Quite a few of them automatically assume that all members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus are also card-carrying members of the DSA. Out of about fifty sites I looked at, only one non-Far Right site even mentioned Congressional members:

From http://knowledgerush.com/kr/encyclopedia/Democratic_Socialists_of_America/
"Three DSA members are currently in the United States Congress: Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Danny Davis (D-IL), and Major Owens (D-NY)."

(And Major Owens is now retired from Congress.) I suppose it's possible, but I doubt it.

#33 bbt,

I know what you mean but it's not clever and it's not pointless. It's how it will be if the progressives get their way.

Here's to digging a little deeper. There are lots of progressives on both sides. Seventy members of congress state that they belong to the DSA or Democratic Socialists of America. Here's how their membership document starts:

"THE POLITICAL PERSPECTIVE OF THE DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISTS OF AMERICA
PREAMBLE
At the beginning of the 20th century, a young and vibrant socialist movement anticipated decades of great advances on
the road to a world free from capitalist exploitation -- a socialist society built on the enduring principles of equality,
justice and solidarity among peoples."

Seventy members of congress say it openly. Seventy.

Why would people give money to the Republicans just because Obama and his European style socialist friends are trying to get the United States into the same condition as Greece, Spain, etc.

Why would the idea of being a debtor nation having to grovel before China bother Americans?

What's wrong with having to spend half of federal tax revenues on paying interest on the national dept?

Just because the health care bill pretty much sold out most voters and will leave them worse off rather than better off isn't a reason to be hacked off is it?

I know it doesn't seem to contain anything to contain the cost of tax care but if the Democrats did that the people they've been taking money from might stop giving them money.

Well it does massively reduce the amount of money for senior health care but goodness knows spending money on keeping seniors around has got to be a waste of money.

As a senior I must admit that I think two to the head would come out ahead of what I'm looking at but maybe that's just me.

The really depressing thing is how many people now agree with me that the United States is going under.

You guys have a great day and may God bless and keep each of you especially you atheists. Most of you seem to be committed to making the government take over the role of God in your lives and if there is anything worse than worshiping nothing it's counting on the government to love you and look out for your best interest. You are better off with an imaginary friend.

You know, maybe if you all at D.U. would take a second and quit patting yourselves on the back for how clever you think you are and look at some of this stuff in depth with more than an interest at how you can cheap shot things, you might, just maybe find that there is a lot of this you *should* be scarred of no matter what political direction it's coming from.
Then again, maybe it's time I took ANOTHER year off from reading D.U. if this is how you plan to continue.

hmmm... higher taxes, higher energy prices, increased union power - especially for public service unions, horrendous government debt, printing money, crony capitalism, and government micromanagement of everything by people who have never managed ANYTHING.

And oh yes, virtually the entire press acting as a fan club for this.

What could America possibly be concerned about??

This doesn't make sense if you think that the democrats and republicans are going opposite directions. But that is wrong, they are going the same direction. They both have a certain outward persona but internally they are progressives. And soon the only people that think either of them are doing a good job will be the same folks who believe the moon landings were staged.

28, SmartAlix, http://tinyurl.com/a89rwq

29, Olo Baggins of Bywater, That's a good catch.... I didn't bother checking the Lincoln quote.

On the matter of grabbing a pile of cities with Republican mayors, I wouldn't be surprised if you could find similar poverty figures. However, the list is supposedly about the top ten cities with the highest poverty rates (regardless of political affiliation)... cherry picking for Republican mayors COULD lead to similar but with lower figures (assuming the ranking was accurate to begin with).

I suspect that if you grabbed a pile of cities with current or recent Republican mayors the poverty numbers would be the same. And there are probably a number of cities with lower poverty numbers and Democratic mayors.

Philadelphia , PA - (9th)...since 1952;

Newark , NJ - (10th)....since 1907.

Einstein once said, <i>'The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.'</i> It is the poor who habitually elect Democrats---yet they are still POOR.

<i> "You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves."</i>

Does anyone under 50 really fear Socialism?

Aren't those the guys with decent safety nets, free education and health care for all?

Oooh, I'm shaking in by boots at the image.

I think the word/concept as a fear tactic has lost all sting.

Yes, I'll keep off of your lawn gramps, now go listen to your Perry Como collection and leave us alone.
