Putting together the two things that should not be together; video games, and people too inept to use a controller. Good luck Microsoft, this will go over like the Beatles Rock Band, pallets of them unsold…
The real problem here is that if the father takes the child to the hospital, child services could become involved, and the family could be torn apart! It’s happened before…
I think Kinect would be great for a home workout, but not for playing games. I don’t want to play a game for 3 hours, flailing my arms around rather than clicking a mouse or controller button.
On my Wii I have to click a whole bunch of health and safety warnings before I can use it – because some Americans managed to throw the controller at that cat.
So with the Kinect thing and no controller how am I going to show my acceptance ?
Perhaps I have to bow down 3times before the Microsoft logo.
Kinect is going to be huge. They are selling like hotcakes here, and as soon as you actually try one you’ll probably want one. The unfortunate accident you see in this video is a most likely a rarity. I’ve played with this thing and unless you are ridiculously spastic, you won’t do more than slightly brush the person beside you. This is for everyone, avid Halo players right up to old guys like me. Not only that but it is cheap. If you buy the unit by itself it is $150 (CAD), but if you buy it in a package with an Xbox, it is only $200. That’s like getting an Xbox for $50. 3 Kinects have already been purchased just within my son’s group of close friends, within a week of launch. They play every day and no one has been injured.
Much adieu about nothing. People have broken wrists/arms by accidentally coming in contact with a wall while swinging the Wii controller around. This was just an unfortunate accident. Next time they’ll be more careful.
I’ve taken the time to try some of these games out, and I can honestly say this device takes video games to a whole new level… of stupidity. It’s simply a glorified EyeToy and you can remember how well that worked out. It’s selling merely as a curiosity at this point and nothing more.
I don’t understand the appeal of the Wii/Xbox/PS3 body-motion-capture controllers.
If I wanted to actually participate in a physical activity – I’d go outside and get some exercise.
But I don’t. I want to sit on my fat ass, barely moving, staring at a gigantic TV, while mashing my thumbs into a controller and killing anything that moves on the screen.
M$ will wind up putting two plastic sheets with six foot circles on them to demarc each players “Exclusion Zone” !!! That should satisfy the lawyers !!!
I’ve injured many a prom date dancing and that was decades before Kinect. Though to be fair the government did issue a warning about my footwork that I had to present to any prospective dance partner.
You naysayers have little to stand on given that you haven’t actually tried it. Try it. It’s amazing. I rarely say that about anything technology-related. I have an iPad. It’s nice. It’s not amazing. Kinect is amazing.
I’m guessing that Kinect has already, or will by the end of the year, sold more copies than betamax ever did. Bad comparison.
A friend of mine already bought one, I liked it. His kids love it. However, I’m not buying one yet as there aren’t any games for it that grab my interest so far. The Star Wars game will be interesting to try though.
Plus, I’m still using an Xbox from 2006 and I don’t want to buy any new peripherals for it until it dies and I buy one of the new slim versions or it’s next iteration.

Two people flailing about while standing less than a foot apart from each other results in collision.
Wow holy crap! Who could have predicted that?

SKL
Is this any different than the myriad of “shots to the groin” videos that sustain Funniest Videos TV show?
It could have been worse, it could have been the Nose-punch-of-DEATH. He might have cause the “bone” to enter the brain.
“pallets of them unsold…”
Disagree, based on what I saw at Best Buy this past weekend.

“Next time they’ll be more careful.”
I think in the land of the brave they issue a class-action lawsuit and we end up having to click through a dozen pages of warnings.

John C Dvorak said “I’ve been skeptical about this device since day one.”
Of course, that is Dvorak’s reaction to almost all new products.

I thought this was some dancing at a straight party

It’ll sell like hotcakes at Christmas, then turn into Betamax. It’s dorkier than a Segway.
Amazon’s Kindle will be the numero uno Christmas toy.

Except for the fat part I agree completely.
I want to have fine control with small thumb or finger movements. I do not want exertion.
