Every time you hear of a new high (low?) in stupidity, there’s something else out there to raise (lower?) the bar even more.
A 13-year-old boy was arrested Friday for using a permanent marker while in class at his Oklahoma City middle school, a violation of an obscure city ordinance.
According to an Oklahoma City Police Department report, the boy was spotted “in possession of a permanent marker” by Roosevelt Middle School teacher DeLynn Woodside. The 50-year-old educator told cop Miguel Campos that the student was “writing on a piece of paper, which caused it to bleed over onto the desk.”
Woodside, pictured at right, reported that the child, whose name was redacted by police from the report, attempted to hide the marker when she asked him for it. Strangely, Woodside’s Facebook page reveals that her “likes and interests” include the official “Sharpie Permanent Markers” page on Facebook.
Campos reported that he allowed Woodside, a seventh grade math teacher, to “sign a citation” against the boy, who was then transported to the Community Intervention Center, a juvenile holding facility. A police sergeant subsequently “booked the marker into the property room.”
On another heinous crime front, there’s the report that includes the creative term, “vehicular masturbation.” I guess that’s why the perp has a smile on her face.

Because there was a time when a kid getting arrested for having a marker was so unthinkable that it really just never ever happened.
So when it happens, even once, it’s bizarre.
It troubles me when a teacher CALLS THE COPS on the kid for pen possession. And it’s troubling when the cops actually show up. And arrest the kid.
Then I read comment after comment on the original site COMMENDING the teacher and AGREEING with this bullshit law.
So in the end, it’s not just “one person going too far” – it’s a substantial chunk of the population at large agreeing with her.
As a 20-year employee of a large metropolitan school district, I could tell you stories that would have you screaming from the rooftops to end public education. From Administrators and their sycophants building mini-empires to the abuses committed by teachers on students and non-teaching employees. They call themselves professionals. You guys joke about the Teachers Union, it no joke, its all about power to the union. They are in total denial about what they do as well.
As a woman, I hate to say it, but it seems like the worst of these statist nuts are female. I don’t know why. It’s a bitchfest.

It doesn’t matter if you think the “no marker policy” is good or bad, or if you think schools should just turn a blind eye to the issue and clean up the graffiti when they get to it. THE ISSUE IS: is what the school is doing so unreasonable as to be called into question for its activities? You say they are so you must have an alternative even better solution?
What would that be pray tell? For extra credit, besides recalling a past time where the issue could not even arise, can you say what is “exactly wrong” with the kiddies not being allowed to bring guns, knives, spray paint cans, firecrackers, markets to school? Even if you think they “should” be allowed to do so, what’s wrong with a rule that says they can’t?
What is the basic violation of law, rights, common sense, good education that not allowing kiddies to have markers makes?

It is SHE, not some 15 year old, who needs to be held accountable for HER actions. Now as for this so called teacher, she had this child arrested and set him off on his criminal career for life because he dared to use a marker on paper.
Did she, in turn, surrender herself for the same charges since she was in possession of the very same marker? She is an employee on the property and does not hold the power to represent herself as the property owner in any form. Thus since the child was in possession of the marker without proper clearance of the owner, she too did not posses the clearance of the owners.
