The fearsome news Voltron that is the Daily News Beastweek has compiled a list of the 40 Drunkest Cities in the US, using the average number of drinks consumed per person in a month. So how did your city fare?
Well, the results are somewhat surprising! Here are the top ten:
- 1. Milwaukee, WI
- 2. Fargo, ND
- 3. San Francisco, CA
- 4. Austin, TX
- 5. Reno, NV
- 6. Burlington, VT
- 7. Omaha, NE
- 8. Boston, MA
- 9. Anchorage, AK
- 10. San Diego, CA
So most of those make sense. Boston, obviously. The Midwest, clearly. But San Francisco? That seems odd. I guess you have to factor in all the fancy wine and fruity cocktails consumed at summer garden parties. (Everyone in San Francisco is gay, you see). Otherwise America’s gay lagoon doesn’t strike me as a very drinky-drinky city.

TBH, San Diego surprises me more than SF. Lots of great wine and craft beer drinking in SF. Lots of bars with great mixed drinks. SD must be based entirely on the Corona crowd.
It’s really annoying to read naive writers. San Francisco has always been at the top of the list for bars per capita. This has been a solid trend since the Barbary Coast days. I actually expected SF to come in at number one.
foobar – actually I’m really fond of lesbians and the whiskered biscuit.
Considering how early the bars have to close in Boston, it should get a higher rating for consumption per minute-per person.
Well actually, now I think about it. I’ve been hungover in 8 of the 10 cities. That’s uncanny.
When I started driving the main risk was getting killed by some idiot drunk driving or a young adult with a lot of hormones and no brains. Now the texters and people talking on the phone are at least as likely to kill you.
I have lived in 5 of the top 10 cities. The irony is I have never had any alcoholic drink ever.
[That means that when you wake up in the morning, that's as good as you're going to feel all day. - ed.]
Having grown up in Milwaukee, it being at the top makes sense. In fact, I remember a report decades ago that said Milwaukee was number 2 to New York, and that was because of the size of NY. Not sure what happened to NY since then.
There were many neighborhoods in Milwaukee where there was a bar on almost every corner of an intersection.
What’s in the Philly water that’s protecting the liver?
@ed Yes but I don’t have to clean the toilet or call my lawyer to bail me out.
The hilarious thing is reading this while your buzzed and living near Omaha.
