Abraham Mashal

Abe Mashal, a 31-year-old dog trainer from St. Charles, says FBI agents told him he ended up on the government’s no-fly list because he exchanged e-mails with a Muslim cleric they were monitoring.

The topic: How to raise his children in an interfaith household.

Mashal said he has never had any links to terror or terrorists and is a “patriotic,” honorably discharged Marine Corps veteran.

He found out he’d been flagged last April, when he tried to board a flight to Spokane, Wash., to train dogs for a client. Since then, his family members and friends have been questioned, and he said he has lost business because he isn’t allowed to fly.

Mashal is one of 17 plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed in June by the American Civil Liberties Union over the list.

FBI agents questioned him at Midway Airport, then at his home. Finally, he was summoned to a hotel in Schaumburg, where more FBI agents told him he’d been placed on the no-fly list because of an e-mail he had sent to an imam — a Muslim cleric — whom they’d been watching.

Mashal said he had sought the imam’s advice about raising children in a mixed-religion household. Mashal is Muslim; his wife is Christian.

He said the agents offered to get him off the list — if he would become an undercover informant at mosques. He refused and said he feels he was being blackmailed.

Same as it ever was.

  1. Benjamin says:

#23 Tim McVey was an atheist. You meant to ban atheist from driving trucks, right?

  2. nobody says:

McVeigh sounds Irish – so obviously a terrorist.

Of course that’s the real unfairness, Irish catholics have been official suppliers of home grown terrorism and general national bogey-man since the 16th century and suddenly all this bespoke hand crafted home grown terrorism is outsourced to some foreigners that can do it better and cheaper.

  3. deowll says:

Same kind of crap that ended up creating Ruby Ridge. Another low water mark in American law enforcement.

  4. eaze says:

one small point to make that seems to have been missed so far: If he had co-operated, they would have turned him into their real terrorist, that’s where all of these other so called terrorists come from..

  5. Rick says:

What the heck is he doing in the Marines when he won’t even do some spying for us?

  6. ggore says:

What was he doing training dogs in the first place? Doesn’t he know that dogs are considered evil in Islam, and he should have both feet and hands cut off according to Sharia Law because he touched a dog, or was even in a country that allows dogs? Shouldn’t we be passing laws to ban the possession or existence of dogs in the U.S. to appease the Muslims instead of persecuting this poor guy?

(posted in sarcasm, but the fact remains that dogs are considered unclean in the Islamic world)

  7. Benjamin says:

They may just reactivate him and transfer him to intelligence. If you are discharged from the military you are in the reserves for an equivalent number of years.

  8. Nobody says:

#36 – killing, committing adultery and coverting your neighbor’s SUV is considered naughty in the christian world but even some preachers seem to do it.

  9. KD Martin says:

    Nobody,

    “>whisper …
    The presidents a WHAT!!!!!”

    Near!

And somebody’s got to go back and get a sh*tload of dimes.

  10. Glenn E. says:

So while the Feds are allowing dangerous weapons to slip across the border to Mexico, as part of some ill-conceived “sting” (I’m guessing). They harass and and blackmail law abiding citizens to compromise their principles and put themselves in danger. Just so Federal agents can get promoted, for their investigative “work”.

  11. Mr. Fusion says:

    #31,

McVeigh was baptized Catholic and attended Catholic churches off and on throughout his life. He was attended by a Catholic Priest before his execution

It has only been recently that he has been called an atheist by those on the right to deflect criticism. Very typical as those on the right make things up and regurgitate them as fact.
