In a sea of indistinguishable onlookers clad in black with their backs turned to the camera, one man stood out at Kim Jong Il’s funeral.
The Associated Press released a photo of the procession in North Korea, and a hawk-eyed Reddit contributor was quick to point out an anomaly in the otherwise uniform crowd of mourners. In the photo above, one man appears to be nearly twice as tall as the gentlemen on his left and right.
Who is this giant? Could it be Ri “Michael” Myung Hun — North Korea’s national basketball star — as some commenters have suggested? Thanks to North Korea’s strictly controlled and photoshop-happy media, rumors are certain to abound, and we may never know for sure.
Well, maybe just one giant?

So fake, it’s dumb
With their starvation economy and poor protein sources, what they are actually creating is a race of midgetized, brain damaged, conservative, right wing, dare I say it……..sheeple.
Pedro–there should be a more culturally sensitive term but water buffalo doesn’t fit, not piglet, nor chickiepoo. Any help?
Sheep people is sheep people. The one thing I’m having trouble with is the visualization of a communist bunch of sheep as being conservatives. I guess then that that makes Moscow from late 1910′s until the mid 1980′s the mecca of conservatism, huh?
Could that be the reason why Peanut Carter send them condolences for Kim?
Conservative: all about maintaining the status quo, and what else is an authoritarian dictatorship? Demanding loyalty to King and Country, fear of outsiders? Limiting access to alternative information?
Yes, all very conservative.
I understand the UN had a moment of silence to note his passing as well. I do have to wonder what real benefit to anyone the UN provides except a forum in which the have not nations can band together to force more aid from the haves===all stuff I think could be done in multi-lateral direct talks?
Could the UN “ever” work to coerce compliance from dictatorial/oppressive states==as in the current ratcheting sanctions on Iran? Seems to me thats what the UN “should be” all about. Categories of nations, correctly applied, noting what access to world resources you get with yes, a thriving Black Market around such actions. But evidently being kept out of World Bank mechanisms does retard your economy.
Why not use what actually “works” === if anything really does?
Only reason to honor Kim Jung Ill is to get something from Kin Jung Un or the military behind him and I find that dubious.
Why not try “dealing with reality” for a change?
Not even they agree with you. They are socialist/communists
Ya sure. Focus in on the giant. Not the guy positioned in back with the automatic weapon – not unlike like a prison guard!
One guy with a carefully monitored case of agromegaly does not a race of giants make.
He happens to be 7 ft 8.5 in, Ri Myung Hun, a former basketball player with the North Korean national team.
Unless you want to mean that he is a big crop grower, what he suffers from is Acromegaly
He’s just looking into the crowd looking for his mom.
Big Foot.
Christopher Hitchens on North Korea:
Since there is only one tall person I would have asked, “is North Korea creating a race of short people?”
No. People get short when starvation stunts their growth.
By the way, its 00:16 here. Happy new year…
Happy New Year!
The sheep gleefully following the xtian calendar.
I can’t get over how different they look to South Koreans. It is like comparing a Belgian to a Norwegian.
This is sad. Tall people never live past 65, and most die very young. Think about how many fat, tall, or barrel chested old people you ever see.
Define tall.
BTW- a barrel chest is usually symptomatic of disease.
You know nothing, Jon Snow.
This is a country of tens of millions that are noticeably shorter than their southern countrymen, all because of the depravity they imported from the West called Communism. Even the Chinese knew better.
Poor guy lives in a country that doesn’t have enough skilled surgeons to do the delicate pituitary operation to fix his growth problem. Probably will die before he turns 45.
