After decades of drilling , Russian scientists have finally managed to pierce through Antarctica’s ice sheet to reveal the secrets of a unique sub-glacial lake, Vostok, that has been sealed there for the past 20 million years, a scientific source said on Monday. “Yesterday, our scientists stopped drilling at the depth of 3,768 meters and reached the surface of the sub-glacial lake,” the source said.
Explorers hope Lake Vostok, which is the largest of Antarctica’s buried network of icebound lakes and also one of the largest lakes in the world, could reveal new forms of life and show how life evolved before the ice age. Lake Vostok could also offer a glimpse of what conditions exist for life in similar extreme conditions on Mars and Jupiter’s moon, Europa, according to RedOrbit scientific news portal. With the current events happening at Lake Vostok, an old theory saying that German Nazis may have built a secret base there as early as the 1930s, has resurfaced.
It is thought that towards the end of the Second World War, the Nazis moved to the South Pole and started constructing a base at Lake Vostok. In 1943, Grand Admiral Karl Dontiz was quoted saying “Germany’s submarine fleet is proud that it created an unassailable fortress for the Fuehrer on the other end of the world,” in Antarctica.According to German naval archives, months after Germany surrendered to the Allies in April, 1945, the German submarine U-530 arrived at the South Pole from the Port of Kiel. Crewmembers constructed an ice cave and supposedly stored several boxes of relics from the Third Reich, including Hitler’s secret files.
It is also rumored that later the submarine U-977 delivered the remains of Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun to Antarctica for DNA cloning purposes.

It was very perceptive of the Nazis to store DNA for cloning purposes 7 or 8 years before it was discovered, did they know something the rest of the world didn’t?

Well, finally normal human curiosity, science and research have won over regressive progressive eco-Nazis. We will now know what is in the lake and gain a lot of potentially useful knowledge. Aside from those personalities already mentioned, there are the religious zealots (evangelists and televangelists) that have earned a very good living by publishing books and creating a following of true believers that are convinced the apocalypse is (always) just around the corner and all the signs of prophecy are (always) complete and the Rapture will (always) be soon because Jesus is (always) coming back to kick the asses of all the bad people in the world who are not the true believers.

Accept for the Nazi crapola, I predicted that this was what the Russian scientists were after. Looking to prove Darwin was close (but not 100%). And while they’re not subject to the US Constitution (being Russian). It occurs to me that it’s a violation of “the separation of church and state” clause, to use public funds to further attempts to prove Darwin’s theology, over all other religious beliefs that hold the opposite origin of life. And many a tax funded scientific grant goes toward just such a goal. They sure as hell don’t fund Intelligent Design research, to balance out.
So why don’t the conservative Republicans jump on THAT?! And yet they go the other extreme, by opposing making faith-run public institutions provide for birth control in employee health plans. If you worked for some public concern, such as a hospital. And whoever ran it, had certain “religious” notions about marriage, raising children, and how many. Would you want them tailoring your health plan’s benefits according to their ideological fantasies. I wouldn’t. How would taking away your choices, be considered defending the religious rights of another, who just happened to be your boss? Is it richer’s rights versus poorer’s rights? If they can’t refuse employment on the basis of one’s beliefs. Then they ought not to be able to dictate or deny personal health and procreation options, that they don’t practice themselves. It’s not like there are any large hospitals, just for ailing monks and clergy.
