After decades of drilling , Russian scientists have finally managed to pierce through Antarctica’s ice sheet to reveal the secrets of a unique sub-glacial lake, Vostok, that has been sealed there for the past 20 million years, a scientific source said on Monday. “Yesterday, our scientists stopped drilling at the depth of 3,768 meters and reached the surface of the sub-glacial lake,” the source said.

Explorers hope Lake Vostok, which is the largest of Antarctica’s buried network of icebound lakes and also one of the largest lakes in the world, could reveal new forms of life and show how life evolved before the ice age. Lake Vostok could also offer a glimpse of what conditions exist for life in similar extreme conditions on Mars and Jupiter’s moon, Europa, according to RedOrbit scientific news portal. With the current events happening at Lake Vostok, an old theory saying that German Nazis may have built a secret base there as early as the 1930s, has resurfaced.

It is thought that towards the end of the Second World War, the Nazis moved to the South Pole and started constructing a base at Lake Vostok. In 1943, Grand Admiral Karl Dontiz was quoted saying “Germany’s submarine fleet is proud that it created an unassailable fortress for the Fuehrer on the other end of the world,” in Antarctica.

According to German naval archives, months after Germany surrendered to the Allies in April, 1945, the German submarine U-530 arrived at the South Pole from the Port of Kiel. Crewmembers constructed an ice cave and supposedly stored several boxes of relics from the Third Reich, including Hitler’s secret files.

It is also rumored that later the submarine U-977 delivered the remains of Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun to Antarctica for DNA cloning purposes.

Good stuff.

I’d have liked the Russian scientsts to have been part of a bad movie plot but I am glad they are safe.

It was very perceptive of the Nazis to store DNA for cloning purposes 7 or 8 years before it was discovered, did they know something the rest of the world didn’t?

Who comes up with this stuff? It’s like real life imitating Indiana Jones or the video game Castle Wolfenstein!

Still, I’m a little disappointed in the lack of creativity. I mean shouldn’t there be some sort of sex scandal involving UFO’s here? And why isn’t there some sort of wacko theory tying our current political candidates to Adolf Hitler somehow? I mean, can’t you easily see any one of the Republican candidates tied to donating funds for the exploration of the South Pole? We already know “the government” funds this kind of thing.

Give it time. I’m sure someone is off his/her meds and will eventually start blogging about politics…

I knew the Russian scientists were ice fishing! I guess now the Russians are going to get into the bottle water industry. I see their marketing campaign now: “The pure age old glacier water, Hitler was drinking. And you can too!”

  4. Skeptic: Post # ≥1 says:

Finally! Their next steps are to erect a small hut, unreel 3800 meters of fishing line, grab a couple of vodka’s and sit back and wait.

The Canadian team will be arriving shortly since the ice is thick enough for skating.

    Win for the Science!
For years, under Leftist and US PC pressure Russian team have lingered within hundreds of feet from this lake (initial drilling have almost reached it when eco-Nazi mostly from US have raised Hell objecting to any further drilling for the sake of not “contaminating” the lake). Well, finally normal human curiosity, science and research have won over regressive progressive eco-Nazis. We will now know what is in the lake and gain a lot of potentially useful knowledge. And I wouldn’t mind Vostok bottled water too.
Million times greater win than the recent one by entertainment sports Giants.

What if its just a bunch of water and nothing else?

Not that that isn’t a pinnacle of scientific importance mind you.

Look, you want a sensational story about this adventure right? Well, they aren’t hiding the fact that it was an extravagant sexual experiment.

Just read the quotes from various sources… (please excuse my poor Russian to English translation)

“This was the most difficult encounter we have ever had. Our frozen tools, coupled with silicone lubrication allowed us to penetrate for hours at a time. We took turns inserting our bits while the others did their testes. Urik was the first to erupt into the lake. There was a possibility that Vostok would be a squirter (under pressure from the ice), but the hole filled only partially filled.

There are concerns that screwing with the ice could contaminate the virgin environment, but further studies will verify if the lake has traces of ancient micro-orgasms.

Meanwhile, teams from the UK and the US are very excited and are mounting their expeditions.

…. except in those school districts in America, where creationist cretins prevent students from learning whatever will be discovered, since they are certain God created the Earth 6,000 years ago, probably on a Tuesday night. The Indiana Senate is the latest to move to the anti-science side, preparing their state’s students to lose in the global market place of the future.

Hitlers remains (basically only his teeth) were found in diskettebox in some archive in Russia a few years ago. They acknowledged it to be real as Hitler had some very special bridges and other exotic dental work. It all appeared to match his dental records from just before the war.

Why were they out of touch and feared to have fallen to the Thing or rabid penguins? Did they crawl down the hole and enjoy the relatively balmy weather and cool clear waters of Lake Vostok Spa?

Thanks for the link. I’ve never checked out his website. There’s only so much time each day I can waste on nonsense like that or DU.

Aside from those personalities already mentioned, there are the religious zealots (evangelists and televangelists) that have earned a very good living by publishing books and creating a following of true believers that are convinced the apocalypse is (always) just around the corner and all the signs of prophecy are (always) complete and the Rapture will (always) be soon because Jesus is (always) coming back to kick the asses of all the bad people in the world who are not the true believers.

Peddling paranoia and fear is a cottage industry that pays off well.

        Just ask the government.

  19. Glenn E. says:

Accept for the Nazi crapola, I predicted that this was what the Russian scientists were after. Looking to prove Darwin was close (but not 100%). And while they’re not subject to the US Constitution (being Russian). It occurs to me that it’s a violation of “the separation of church and state” clause, to use public funds to further attempts to prove Darwin’s theology, over all other religious beliefs that hold the opposite origin of life. And many a tax funded scientific grant goes toward just such a goal. They sure as hell don’t fund Intelligent Design research, to balance out.

So why don’t the conservative Republicans jump on THAT?! And yet they go the other extreme, by opposing making faith-run public institutions provide for birth control in employee health plans. Even though 28 US states already do this! Having it part of Obama’s National Health Care bill is their excuse for making a stink against it. Holding all of our rightful health care benefits hostage, while they make for political book.

If you worked for some public concern, such as a hospital. And whoever ran it, had certain “religious” notions about marriage, raising children, and how many. Would you want them tailoring your health plan’s benefits according to their ideological fantasies. I wouldn’t. How would taking away your choices, be considered defending the religious rights of another, who just happened to be your boss? Is it richer’s rights versus poorer’s rights? If they can’t refuse employment on the basis of one’s beliefs. Then they ought not to be able to dictate or deny personal health and procreation options, that they don’t practice themselves. It’s not like there are any large hospitals, just for ailing monks and clergy.

It’s a good thing there are no public hospitals run by Snake Handlers. “We don’t cover the cost of contraceptives. But we do cover the cost of buying live snakes, and snake food.” Glory Hallelujah.

  20. Animby says:

Wow! From Nazis conspiracy nuttiness to unconstitutional health laws in one step and no segue. Interesting.

I would suggest you do a quick dictionary search to understand the difference between “accept” and “except.” I don’t believe this is the first time you’ve made this error.
