SEATTLE (CBS SEATTLE) – A Seattle school has banned students from celebrating a new holiday this year: Halloween.

Lafayette Elementary School has decided to not allow students to dress up in costume for Halloween this year. And there is still some discrepancy between parents and the administration as to why the ban has been implemented this fall.

The decision was first reported by the district (Seattle Public Schools) as being a preventative measure in the event that Halloween costumes could offend and upset students who come from other cultures. Dozens of parents complained to the school over the measure demanding a detailed explanation.

These people have lost their sense of humor, pity.

  1. DaveX says:

My wife is a teacher and at her school they are not allowed to have any reference to Halloween, X-mas, Valentines day, St. Patrick’s day or Easter because these are all religious holidays. I’m atheist and I think it’s ridiculous, just let the kids have fun. But, they still get X-mas off and if someone wants Jewish or Muslim holidays off they can have them.

Ok, I see the Bears left hand, and I see the Bears right hand on her shoulder, but what’s that thing just behind the lolipop!

  2. Mad Dog Jack says:

The people who voted this ban could offend and upset people and should be exiled to Mars.

  3. dusanmal says:

“These people have lost their sense of humor, pity.” – nothing here about sense of humor. It is all about control. If you demand that no one is offended and you control what is offensive… you can control whatever you want. It is not that someone brought forth a lawsuit (and you know who would be the people bringing the lawsuits – again those who want to control what others do). Same line as Michele O’ school lunch portions control, health care control, refusal to let social security in private hands, issuing one new regulation every 2 hours,… It is all about Progressives and Control Freaks.

    • What? The moth is always drawn to the flame? says:

Dude, you need some sex or something. Chill.

  4. Rick says:

First it was all about not offending the Christians, now its all about not offending the Muslims.

    • shooff says:

      Rick,

Rural communities in Ohio, Iowa, Pa. all have no Halloween celebrations during school hours.

They (the school districts) are sensitive to the few “liberal” Amish and Mennonites that attend “English” schools.

You will find few Islamist there. This about taking “easy targets” off the firing line. It is also about protecting teachers, parents, and children from wasting taxpayer money partying on a Pagan holiday.

I always felt like my kid’s Halloween party at school felt awkward. While cute it had so many issues (although Boo Peep teacher was so hot !!!!) that it really looked like circus with half willing participants.

  5. noname says:

    I’d do her!

  6. Nate says:

If schools want to be secular, then let them be secular across the board, including Halloween.

    • gildersleeve says:

Bah – time to call “secular” for what it really is – indifferent. Seattle Schools have put out the Beige Alert.

  7. MartinJJ says:

“…Halloween falls this year on a half day of school, we not allow costumes. It takes students a while to change into their costumes, and students are distracted taking away from the already limited instructional time.”

“…reported by the district as being a preventative measure in the event that Halloween costumes could offend and upset students who come from other cultures.”

Eh? What’s the real reason? Lack of time or offending other cultures? Or something else?

  8. Ah_Yea says:

I’m wondering how long it will take the FBI to track down the guy in the PedoBear suit and put him away.

  9. McCullough says:

Why can’t others assimilate into American culture, such as it is? How long before books and movies will be sanitized as not to offend. Imagine “To Kill a Mockingbird” without the Halloween scene, or “It’s a Wonderful Life” with the Christian and supernatural themes removed.

  10. gildersleeve says:

I keep imagining a bunch of, say, Indian immigrants, whose kids are going “They banned it? Aww crap – I’ve been looking forward to trick-or-treat.”

I am sick of Americans who are ashamed of being Americans. I’m throwing a Halloween party now, just to counter this stupidity.

  11. get real says:

god, I can’t believe how stupid you people are! THE reason that all the holidays are being removed from public schools is that the schools are doing everything they can to keep from being SUED! That’s right, the reason is stupid parents that get offended when little bobby is exposed to someone else’s religion/culture/etc. It’s the god damn parents that are behind this, jews because little ira gets upset about not having xmas, atheists because sunflower can’t have easter bunny candy, etc. jesus x christ, you parents need to grow the fuck up, you have ruined my kids having secular fun with all the holidays at school!

    • john says:

When I was in school it was good to be exposed to other culture and traditions. Now if one person feels different we all much suffer. Maybe we should all wear white cloths and black shoes and try never to be unique. These kids will have a wake up call when they get to be adults.

  12. john says:

Tell me again why we worry about other cultures when they come over here to live? So when I go to Mexico I should expect them to all speak english just so I don’t feel out of place? What culture do we have anymore as US citizens? Really I think maybe we should stop worrying so much about making the minority a little mad.

  13. MikeN says:

Why are schools celebrating Halloween? It is strictly a night holiday.

  14. Grandpa says:

It’s also offensive to right wing Christian nutcases. aka: Republicans.
