This will hurt the bottom line of cities and counties who set up speed traps to build revenue. I’m all broken up about that.

A federal judge in Missouri ruled this week held that drivers have a First Amendment right to flash their headlights to warn other motorists of nearby police and speed traps.

The order by U.S. District Judge Henry E. Autrey in St. Louis on Monday stems from a lawsuit filed by Ellisville resident Michael Elli. In 2012, Elli flashed his headlights to warn oncoming vehicles of a radar set up by police in the town of Ellisville.

A flash of headlights is a common way motorists communicate to oncoming drivers of either a dangerous situation or the presence of police — in essence, a warning to slow down.

    First Amendment huh?

Same one that allows citizens to film police in public places if they aren’t interfering in their work?

Sadly…..the court has a lot of work to do that it has been ignoring. Maybe google glass will solve this.

Gotta love those unintended consequences……or were they?

But, I would like them to control the micro-drone that flies some 200 ft above and ahead of the vehicle to help me {there’s usually not much room for a co-pilot because of all the junk} spot roadblocks, pigs, Hardee’s, the beerstore, llamas, armadillos, and other roadway hazards.

Call me a *glasshole*, I guess.

Uber jackbooted sheep thug if you will. Is this what you mean to say??

If not, in our culture, heroes Defend those who are attacked by Mobs, and they proclaim their name and identity.

Not you though. Its amazing what we reveal in moments of fatigue? Ha, ha. Better get to bed … boy.

[no insipid platitude added] /// Not when the main post is so atrocious and revealing. No. Not then.

“Forgive them Oh Lord…..they are only following you……..!” (I mean, let’s put the responsibility where these mean spirited and hateful notions arise?)

        Mean Spirited Hoomans. (Silly too!)

  2. Guyver says:

I heard of a similar outcome for a case out in San Francisco.

How long will someone’s right to free speech be able to challenge a local government’s position to generate revenue?

Conflict of interest. Pure and simple.

  3. McCullough says:

In Colorado we flash our lights to warn drivers of all kinds of things, including deer, elk, bear and of course pigs.

      +1

    • Oinker says:

      Especially pigs wearing lipstick!

    • Tim says:

I flash’em. At night, it is usually a dim (to check), bright (to warn) and dim when rounding a hill or curve. But, usually, in the daytime it is to warn of oficer fuckme ’round the bend or to verify for myself that the the one guy that has stuck next to the other guy going down the road for the last 5 miles really is so much of an asshole as to not get over or, at least, speed up or drop off to leave a maneuverable gap. ffffffFFFFFUUUUUUDFJKFKFKK!!!!!

I was walking down the street one day and saw three men in suits sitting in a car. As I walked by I said: “Gosh, you guys sure are being obvious.” They left that location about 5 minutes later. Probably would have arrested me as a terrorist these days.

      • Rex says:

I did something similar, I was at work and they were in the parking lot. They were narcs and they did arrest me. My dad had to come down and get me out. I had to sign a statement that I would not sue them and they dropped all charges. This was back in 74 so if you think that we’ve only recently became a police state then you are sadly mistaken.

        • bobbo, picking fruit from the tree of Libertarianism as only an attentive humanist can do says:

I don’t think such agreements are enforceable, and arresting you afterwards has a very low return. All balanced by the fact that any suit from you wouldn’t be worth much either.

Avoid the Gang in Blue as much as you Can. That is what I learned. Hmmm….why was I giving them lip then?

          Ha, ha.

  6. Dallas says:

I thought people were hitting on me. I’m that gorgeous

  7. mainecat says:

I flash the headlights at anyone with HID headlights. Retina Rapers I call them.. They hurt. They leave artifacts for minutes.
Also I flash them just to watch the other cars hit the brakes, even when there’s no speed trap. Suckers…

    • Dipstick says:

Me too! I love flashing my headlights, especially when there are no cops.

I even once did it to a cop! Naturally, he turned around and then pulled me over where he then asked me why I did it. I told him that I saw some wildlife on the road and that I didn’t want him to hit it. (You can always lie like that.)

What amazes me is why more people don’t use this excuse. But even if it’s in an obvious attempt to warn people of cops looking to issue traffic tickets, you’d think any judge would appreciate your attempts to help keep those cops SAFE and get people to slow down.

Oh well. Tough shit Johnny Law. Now there’s a “precedent”!

  8. Nobody says:

I do a lot of driving and almost no one under fifty even notices when you flash your headlights.

    • Dipstick says:

… They’re too busy texting and letting their phones think for them.

Others are in their portable LIVING ROOM and think your light flashing is all part of the GAME!

  9. MikeN says:

Meanwhile warning about Obama will get you a tax audit.

  10. deegee says:

Don’t break the law and speed and you won’t have anything to whine about.

  11. MikeN says:

This is irrelevant as NHTSA is on course to install mandatory car tracking in all cars, so you either won’t be able to go above the posted limit or will be retroactively mailed a fine. In addition, you will be billed for miles driven to replace the gas tax for electric cars.

  12. Supreme Ultrahuman (I see the comment system is still designed for retards.) says:

MikeN is right, unfortunately for all of us.

The proper solution would be to eliminate speed limits.
