As reported to ECDC by Belgian authorities, on 2 September 2014, following a human error, 45 litres of concentrated live polio virus solution were released into the environment by the pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), in Rixensart city, Belgium. The liquid was conducted directly to a water-treatment plant (Rosieres) and released after treatment in river Lasne affluent of river Dyle which is affluent of the Escaut/Scheldt river. Belgium’s High Council of Public Health conducted a risk assessment that concluded that the risk of infection for the population exposed to the contaminated water is extremely low due to the high level of dilution and the high vaccination coverage (95%) in Belgium.

And if 95% of the population wasn’t vaccinated…?

I was watching Jon Stewart the other day (Oct. 2, episode of The Daily Show) where he goes into this sort of thing about the government’s responsibility to “do whatever it takes to protect American lives.” It’s notable here since the same mentality seems to apply — just NOT necessarily whatever happens to kill you in your own country. This (stupid) mentality suggests that whoever dies, be it from home grown criminals or spilled bio-waste or whatever, that the dead can be assured that whatever killed them was from good old Americans — not those foreign assholes and their body-strapped bombs and all.

Point being: forget about any sort of TAX FUNDED GOVERNMENT PROTECTION! You know, things like the EPA?!!!

“A number of scandals occurred at the Environmental Protection Agency during the Reagan Administration. Over twenty high-level EPA employees were removed from office during Reagan’s first three years as president.[20] Additionally, several Agency officials resigned amidst a variety of charges, ranging from being unduly influenced by industry groups to rewarding or punishing employees based on their political beliefs.[21] Sewergate, the most prominent EPA scandal during this period, involved the targeted release of Superfund grants to enhance the election prospects of local officials aligned with the Republican Party.”

Why did they produce 45 liters of highly concentrated polio in the first place?

It’s almost 12 gallons of crap. I’d like to see what kind of “research” justified the production of it, and the name of the people who signed off the requisition.

I don’t know why anyone is so upset when we encourage this kind of behavior by PAYING FOR PRODUCTS/SERVICES from asshole companies like this.

… Just look at who you pay for Internet access. And you want to bitch about a company dumping toxic waste into a river when you prefer to do business with them and NOT ANY of their competitors?!

Yes! I know! “High speed” internet access providers are pretty much a monopoly but I’m not hearing very much bitching about that — far from it! All anyone bitches about is the PRICE! (If you own any Apple device then it’s pretty clear that you have no clue what I’m even talking about here.)
