For all you Star Trek fans who watched Star Trek Discovery and think Star Trek is dead, the new series The Orville is the new Star Trek. I’ve watched 5 epasodes and I love it. It’s very Trek like but had some adult humor. star Trek Discovery is a loser. Discovery is really really bad.

    Thank you.

  2. bobbo, the culture critic embarassed he's not reading a book says:

Well, episode six tonight “The Krill” was very Star Trek: totally stupid. Krill going to kill a planet full of people but Orville doesn’t want to blow up the Krill ship because there are 12 Krill kiddies on board. His solution?=—save the planet, kill all the Krill except the kiddies, let them run the Krill ship on their own?

Ha, ha…………….so very Star Trek. The opening scene was worth the entire show. At least Kirk would have tried to have sex with the lizard babe.

    ……………I like it.

    • Glenn E. says:

It doesn’t sound like you watched the end of that episode. The Krill ship was towed by the Orville. The Krill children didn’t have to pilot it. The Planet Union, gets to keep it, and study it. Which will probably take longer than the show will be on the air. So don’t expect a lot of overnight technical advances, to Union weaponry or propulsion.

      • bobbo, the culture critic embarassed he's not reading a book says:

Thanks. I don’t remember that detail….so I didn’t pay attention. the story was pretty much “over” when the parents all got turned into burnt toast with huzzah’s all around. Kinda “sick” in that way we think about our “enemies” made up or otherwise.

Only in space…. are they actually aliens.

  3. Zombie says:

Disagree. The new Star Trek is fantastic. It’s movie quality every episode so far (first 4). I loathe that I have to watch it on the cbs app, although it does look good on Apple TV. I hate cbs for it. I was hoping it would suck, but I’m keeping the subscription just for the one show. It’s that good, so far.

I do agree, Orville is good too and is basically Star Trek with a few jokes.

    • bobbo, the culture critic embarassed he's not reading a book says:

………always good to find something you like.

The TV market does seem to be fracturing….every original content provider wanting their own subscriptions. its going to force everyone to android.

    • JCjr says:

      Star Trek: Black Lives Matter.

      -or-

      Star Trek: The Next Genderation.

  4. Ah_Yea says:

The Orville is exactly what happens when you diss the entire Star Trek fanbase.

No fan productions over 15 minutes, cannot use “Star Trek” insignias, clothing, etc. What a mess.

    Paramount screwed themselves royally.

  5. jpfitz says:

It’s turning late night Friday the 13th, I just watched Or-ville trailer from above with the sound muted. Looks very funny, I hope it’s a comedy. Seth McFarland, Duh.

  6. MikeN says:

    Galaxy Quest is very good.

  7. MikeN says:

If Orville is the new Star Trek, then Star Trek is a joke.

    • Ohffs says:

Ah so you have watched discovery.

      • MikeN says:

Hehe. Marc has assured us Orville is like the real Star Trek and unlike Discovery.
I saw this with Enterprise. The series was very good, but after the sequels, people had gotten used to a formula and seemed to be upset that Enterprise wasn’t cheesy enough.

  8. MikeN says:

Seth MacFarlane knew about Harvey Weinstein years ago, and joked about it at the Oscars.

    • Lawrence Delano Purvis says:

After he sang, We Saw Your Boobs.

    • jpfitz says:

Um, most in Hollyweird Knew about the prev Harvey. Even I, just by reading and knowing how much power the fat slob had, that he was a creep.

Seth’s girlfriend was harassed by Mr. creepy, so, Seth make a joke that these women who won Oscars need not worry about Harv anymore.

  9. Mr Diesel - Libertarian says:

I mentioned that I liked it in the other thread about Discovery but also mentioned that Andromeda was coming out on Comet TV but the post was deleted.

Gene Roddenberry also made Andromeda and Earth: Final Conflict.

  10. bullet force says:

    Discovery is really really bad.

  11. Mr Diesel - Libertarian says:

I just watched the Krill episode last night. They worship the god of Avis.

    The jokes practically wrote themselves.

  12. Arijit Singh says:

I don’t know why I hate Orville as new star trek.

  13. Glenn E. says:

Not all the original Star Trek stories were dead serious. As some Scifi fans seem to demand of anything deemed Star Trek like. Remember “A Piece of the Action”? Kirk and Spock as old earth gangsters? On a planet that mimicked Earth of the 1930s? And of course, the episode “I, Mudd” (a homage of I, Robot), was often amusing. There are many other examples.

What often bothered me about Star Trek TOS, was when it ended on a comical note. Usually a joke, at Spock’s expense. But that episode’s story, had had people dying in it. Seemed a bit callous of Kirk to be “moving on” already. This may have been something the Network executives insisted on. Jokes at the end of the show. To lighten things up. Space can’t be about death, all the time. Or some such rationale.

Now we have The Orville. Not purely Star Trek. More like a cross between Star Trek and Red Dwarf. But what I have noticed about the Orville. Is it gets the humor in early, and perhaps a little bit in the middle of the stories. But then the end, it’s quite serious. Perhaps even thought provoking. Star Trek was rarely like that.

Like the “Krill” episode. Capt Mercer is told at the end, by the Krill instructor. That all the Krill children he just saved, will become his enemies, for killing their crew mates. And the Capt. doesn’t even attempt to crack wise about that. The End.

These non-humorous ending alarmed me, at first. I was all “WTF?! This ain’t your Star Trek TOS or TNG!” Because Kirk, Picard, or Data, often had a funny remark at the end. Not so, with The Orville. Nice touch McFarland. He’s found a way to make it, his own unique creation. Nothing funny at the end.

That said, the Helmsman, Malloy. Could tone down his act a bit. His character seems to be the main goto guy, for 90% of the jokes. And I wish Mercer would stop calling every large door, a jar of pickles. It’s gotten old.

    • bobbo, the culture critic embarassed he's not reading a book says:

Nice review. I had a gut feeling going in that direction but not fully realized as you have done.

      makes the show even better.

    • Lawrence Delano Purvis says:

And there’s never any pickles when they get the door open.

  14. Glenn E. says:

The Star Trek franchise is stuck in either Prequel or Reboot mode. It can’t seem to get beyond Star Trek TNG and Voyager, with any new ideas. So they’ve started over again, near the beginning. Filling in the pre-history of the Federation. Or changing it, from what Fan Fiction had made of it. And completely ignoring the Animated Series, stories. I was waiting for Capt. Pike’s adventures. When they dump a completely unknown Capt. Archer onto us fans.

BTW, if there really is an undiscovered 9th planet, in our star system. They should name it “Vulcan”. Why not? It’s highly unlikely we’ll be finding any others, in the next 200 years.

    • MikeN says:

I think Congress should ban use of Enterprise for any NASA spacecraft now and in the future. The shuttle was named after Star Trek, let it end there.

  15. bobbo, the culture critic embarassed he's not reading a book says:

How come Battleship Galactica (whatever) is not included in any of these Star Trek/Wars comparisons?

From years ago, I half remembered the show as pretty good as it got into the Cylon/Human issues of AI and what it was to be human. Now in rerun, it has no appeal at all.

This might be the progress of the show? Just watching Season 3 right now with the human looking cylons (ha, ha…….no way she looks human………………..) Maybe this is where the show finally got interesting?

reminds me of the single pilot for a new space show I saw once. A group of cowboys getting ready for a mission and the robot in the group gave some info that set the group off. In the closing credits, it became clear the robot had LIED. What a nice turn of the usual in the dynamics of a show. Course….. I liked it, so it got canceled. An Anti-Nielsen if you will.

    • MikeN says:

It was terrible once you got to Season 3 or so. The opening miniseries and a bit after that was good.

When you add in a series to the comparison, you have to start with Babylon 5. If it hadn’t been cancelled, Firefly would probably make the list ahead of BSG.

Some big logic holes all over the place, so they have that comparison with Star Trek. Consider, when Xena shows up and they ask her to identify the Final Five, she says ‘they’ll come to me’. Later in the episode, she is killing hostages and says she will keep doing it until they hand over the Five. Well how about you tell us who they are???

    • Mr Diesel - Libertarian says:

Yeah, BSG go slow in parts and it was probably around season 3 but I don’t remember it as I binge watched it on Netflix over a few days. I would pose that it had one of the best series endings ever. Not the last minute or so but right before that with E.J. Olmos.

  16. Ryan says:

The Orville is an American science fiction comedy-drama series created by and starring Seth MacFarlane that premiered on Sunday, September 10, 2017, with new episodes to air Thursdays on Fox during the 2017–18 season. Seth MacFarlane stars as Ed Mercer, an officer in the Planetary Union’s line of exploratory space vessels whose career took a downturn following his divorce, and who is given the titular ship as his first command, only to discover that his ex-wife, Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki), has been assigned to be his First Officer. Inspired by the television series Star Trek, the series tells the story of Mercer, Grayson, and the crew of the Orville as they embark on various diplomatic and exploratory missions.

    • MikeN says:

The latter two posts are an example of what we are supposed to believe flipped the election.

      • bobbo, the culture critic embarassed he's not reading a book says:

        Ha, ha.

        “What Happened?”

        • MikeN says:

The cover should say SPOILER ALERT because below the title it says “HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON”

  17. Vonster says:

Orville rocks. And I bet it’ll be on longer than CBS All Access Star Trek series. That is unsustainable on production budget alone. The hopeful subscription boost is a pipe dream and any bump will immediately be lost when cancelled.

DS9 is still my favorite. Best character development and in-depth stories.

    • MikeN says:

But if they drop Star Trek, they probably lose the subscriptions too, so they will keep spending the money on production and hope things work out. They have an advantage over others like ESPN because they built the infrastructure themselves, and can realize more profits. Are there ads on All Access?

  18. Ah_Yea says:

Ok, I’m going to watch The Orville, soon as it’s on Netflix.

    • bobbo, the culture critic embarassed he's not reading a book says:

      YOU LIE!!!!!!!!!

I was gonna say it fresh, but your own link is close enough: “By doing essentially nothing but letting things happen, conservative America is kicking our ass at providing opportunities for low income and working classes to build wealth and get ahead. ” //// ie: its Republican dumb ass conservative wealth disparity that creates the housing dilema===>not liberal ideology.

Thats why the current proposed tax cut for the alreadytoorich is supported Zero% by Dumbos and about 90% by Pukes.

But………idiot voters do buy into the Labeling exercise that LIARS use. Why do you do it?

      • MikeN says:

Republican areas don’t have the housing dilemma, liberal ones do.
Thomas Piketty’s book on capital and inequality thesis breaks down if housing is excluded.

  19. Does DU have an identy? says:

    If so, what is it?

  20. MikeN says:

Star Trek is ripping off a game on the Stardock platform. Stardock started out selling Galactic Civilizations, written to show OS/2 was superior to Windows.

  21. NewFormatSux says:

Finally got around to watching it. Not bad. They are also ripping off other shows, including Enterprise with the Temporal Civil War.

  22. Showbox says:

Don’t know about others but I am seriously excited about The Orville.

  23. GoMovies says:

The new series The Orville is the new Star Trek

  24. Mr Anderson says:

Looks like a SNL version of Star Trek.
