Microsoft has been working their DLR (Dynamic Language Runtime) for about 3 years now. Python, and VBScript run pretty well on it. John Lam and Co have been cranking on the Ruby (and Rails) implementation for a while. Ruby is gnarly and could take a while longer.

They see it as an opportunity to get into the dynamic language scene. Perl is kind new for them but runs easily under Apache and IIS. They are hoping to get Windows Server licenses sold and maybe some SqlServer as well – both of them are solid products and pretty easy to deploy.

With billg not minding the nest it gives Sam Ramji (MS open source guy) and Ray Ozzie a chance to play with open source world more freely so you’ll more MS guys at OSCON, ApacheCon, RubyConf, PyCon, and their like.

JCD: Sam is a guy worth talking to.

    and, ColdFusion MUST DIE!

  3. Esteban says:

Maybe MobileMe could do a cross-promotion with Cuil. They could make software that only works for Vista.

  4. FRAGaLOT says:

cuil.com does indeed suck! I did a simple porn search and the links I got as search results simply came up as bogus web-virus scanners all saying my PC is infected with spyware, viruses and all kinds of bullshit. But it didn’t detect the fact I’m running Linux.

I just cancelled my Mobile Me account. It was not that cost effective for me when it was dot Mac but at least everything work! I was really hoping for a email only subscription added to Mobile me. Many don’t use or need the added storage,or web page. I just think Apple has made a huge mistake trying to make this a cloud computing experience. If you read the discussions on Apple support, user’s are having all sorts of problems and not just the inability to get mail. Mobile Me seems to be unstable for some.

  6. DWYutzy says:

For me (sigh, no pun intended), I had all kinds of problems for about 1 week and then then MobileMe seemed to settle down and work as I expected. However, the transition totally hosed my “AppleID” and I can’t login to discusses or support any more without creating an entirely new account (thus losing all my history, registrations, etc.) I’ve sent multiple messages to Apple about it and it’s fallen on deaf ears, which, I think is the more severe issue: Other than the monthly extension, I see all kinds of posts where people are having specific problems and seemingly, nobody is even responding, Apple has disabled the chat support, etc.

IMO, Apple is or has become a victim of their own success and is badly struggling on how to deal with it.

  7. hhopper says:

Apple upgraded iTunes and Quicktime on my PC saying it was only going to upgrade two programs, than loaded MobileMe and Bonjour too. This really pissed me off. I don’t have an iPhone or AppleTV. There was no use for the programs.
