Michael Geist:

While CRIA (Canadian Record Industry Association) regularly trumpets commissioned studies as evidence for the problems posed by P2P, this week it released a major study without any fanfare whatsoever.

In summary, CRIA’s own research now concludes… that P2P users frequently try music on P2P services before they buy, that the largest P2P downloader demographic is also the largest music buying demographic, and that reduced purchasing has little to do with the availability of music on P2P services.

This is pretty fucked up when both of my most hated countries, Canada and France have it right on the money when it comes to music downloads. I know its been said here and in other sites, the RIAA campain against file share and for stronger DRM has nothing to do with pirating or lost sales, but has everything to do with extracting the maxium amount of profit from the public by forcing you to buy a seperate copy of your music to play on different devices. I think most know this, but they have have Congress in their pocket and plenty more $$$ to throw around if someone their gets some crazy idea to change.

    Canada Does Rock!!!!!

  3. How can you “hate” Canada? Seriously though, I don’t think hating anything is a good idea. Peace and love, man.

That the RIAA is full of shit is news?

  5. Emery Jeffreys says:

Sooner or later the RIAA will concede that filthy lucre money is driving the greed of the record lables. They are such control freaks that they want to control your every move when listening to their property. Eventually.

Money filthy lucre is not always a bad thing. What goes around comes around and eventually the market will correct itself.

The Internet has allowed me to find some really good music… and it seems like the music I really like comes from groups nobody has heard of. Sooner or later they will get that message.

Two more words: Celine Deon, but we exported her to Vegas.

  9. AB CD says:

I suppose all music should just be free then? I guess all movies too?

  10. Alex says:

No, artists should get paid for their work same as anyone. Just don’t believe that the RIAA or tha MPAA treat artists fairly or that they actually care about them. They have been ripping off artists for years. It is pretty hypocritical for these people to come out for artrists rights now. Maybe they should have their lawyers explain the contracts that they use on said artists before they talk abour caring for them.

Online distribution is here. The RIAA and the MPAA can learn to make that work for them or they can go extinct. Their problem is that both groups realize that online distribution makes them unnecessary and irrelevant. All the fuss you hear are the rationalizations and excuses these two organizations are trying to come up with to justify their existance. Don’t believe for a second that either of these groups cares about anything else besides making themselves filthy rich. If they have to exploit the artists and abuse their customers to do it, fine.

    Canada musical plusses and minuses:

Plusses: Guess Who, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Barenaked Ladies, The Band, Blood Sweat and Tears, Gordon Lightfoot, Rush, Steppenwolf. Even though some of these bands aren’t associated with Canada all that much in the public mind, most of them have several Canada born band members, and got their start in Canada.

Minuses: Bryan Adams, BTO (Guess Who lost their best members and this resulted), Celine Dion, Paul Anka.

Though Canada has its share of duds, that’s a pretty good list of plusses, eh?

  13. AB CD says:

How do people get paid for their work, if everyone can make illegal copies very cheaply and easily?

  14. moss says:

ab cd — have you considered reading the post before commenting? Your question is answered before asking.

AB CD can’t read. He makes it up as he goes along.

What ‘make online distribution work for them’ answers my question?
