There is a way you can tell if its made by Microsoft. Did you have to reboot the toy in the middle of the song when it locked-up?

Yes. It is a MS product. I worked (as a contractor) on the design and development of the software for this doll and the Arthur doll the following year. The next year the division that made them was disbanded.
Not only did the doll interect with the PC software wirelessly, It could sync up with the TV show and act along.
Windows 98 was the OS at the time, and I doubt that any updates have been made in a long time. It’s unlikely the special serial drivers from back then (no USB yet) would work with XP.

Oh man, i remember when that doll came out, wasn’t out for long luckily.
It’s a sure sign that Microsoft was evil back then, get the agents into the house via the kids, i mean, imagine waking up to that thing on your bed with a knife in it’s malformed hands.

Microsoft gave me one to try out for a week and it was just amazing! Infra-Red communication between the PC and the toy (Anyone remember IRDA?) and it was supposed to have games written especially for it so the game became more “interactive”.
I never saw any games though…
Nowadays, technology is much better, so Microsoft should re-use this idea and release it as the Office assistant for the upcoming Office version!

We got one of these for our kids a few years ago. I thought it was really cool, because it worked with the PC and with the daily Barney broadcast. You could upload games to it (personalized for the kid) and it would work in stand-alone mode.
The kids couldn’t have cared less about it, even thought they loved Barney at that time. We eBay’d it after about a year.
We attempted to hack into Barney and get him to say um, “Bite Me!” to no avail. Sigh. I did have some fun taping a Steve Ballmer mask on its face, but was forced to remove it when I put the damned thing out for a garage sale. I think Osama Bin Laden might have bought it, which would explain so much…
Personally, I was waiting for it to blow up!

I bought that ~$100+ Barney and the $100 PC interface for my niece.
I don’t think they ever used the PC interface.
