I'm going to give this a try. Summer is slow, it would be good to create a potboiler like this to liven things up in my neck of the Web woods. I'll come back and let you know how it goes.

Ok, there are a lot of nuts. But I suspect the real reason Mac users freak out is not because you are wrong, but that they secretly worry you might be right!

I am a new convert to this whole affair. I've been running a network for a school district for around 15 years now. Up until two years ago my mission in life was to get every Mac POS off of my network. That all changed when I had to set up an OSX machine for one of our graphics artists. Unlike every previous version of their OS, this one was actually useful - a functional GUI and a real command-line. I had previously been hauling both a Windows and a Linux laptop around. Now here was a machine that had the best of both worlds.

So I became what I despised... not only a Mac user, but one of those annoying frothing-at-the-mouth zealots who won't shut the hell up about them. Now you come along an publish predictions that this great new tool I've discovered will be going away and Apple will be reduced to running Windows? Well, it pissed me off... not because you insulted my precious Mac, but because deep down I worry that they might be insane enought to do just that! And believe me, the Mac as just a pretty Windows box just won't cut it.

I suspect that if they were really truthful, most Mac users would be guilty of the same worry (although they would NEVER admit it). So if it gives you pleasure to terrorize the poor, oppressed Mac faithful, go for it. Religious persecution is thematic in human nature. We shall overcome... and we'll probably keep reading.

John,
Big fan, your plan worked the first time a long time ago, and I saw pretty clearly what you were doing. I've since stopped getting mad at you and have used your strategy in occasional conversations with my wife.
Works everytime.
Thanks,
Ray S

The oldest way to start a ridiculous argument is to insult someone's religion, and it's always amazed me how much religion there is in the computer industry.

Apple and the Mac may be the uber-faith, but there's The Church of Java, the disciples of Linux, etc. Even IBM used to be a quasi-religion. Now Google has religious overtones, and has certainly become an object of worship and even fear.

It's so disappointing to see nerds, who are supposed to be rational and skeptical, unplugging their brains and "believing." One imagines there's no neurological difference between believing in the Mac and believing in Poseidon, god of the sea. (See "The End of Faith" by Sam Harris.)

Funny video, but please proofread your blog before you publish it- it's spelled "miserable" NOT "misewrable". As a writer you should know better.:-)

Mr. Dvorak:

Keep up the great work! I am a Mac user and always enjoy your points of view. Your formula has often been entertaining for me as it works its way through the Mac "community." I teach 7th graders and the similarities of how they react to things and how many Mac users respond hits close to home when you state your points. I enjoy watching my 7th graders over-react too:-)! It is unfortunate we all don't embrace critical thinking. It is an art we can all learn from. Getting someone to think about a topic is something you have mastered long ago, and I hope that others can appreciate that. It is a sign of a great teacher, and you, Mr. Dvorak, are just that. As with me, sometimes the students just don't get it, but that is why reteaching and remediation is so important. Without people like you, many will walk blindly or, even worse, be led along without questioning what may be happening to themselves or in the world around them. Thanks for all I have honestly learned from you and for your entertaining manner of getting your points across. You know, my school iBook I'm typing this on is kind of girly! Hey kids, bring me some of your stickers;-)! Anybody got a Van Halen decal;-)!?!

Peace!
