A high school senior, who faces a Monday morning deadline to apologize to Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback for a disparaging tweet, has said she will not write the apology letter…

Sullivan said her parents and many of her peers support her decision…

Bravo! And kudos to your parents for backing you up.

During a Kansas Youth in Government field trip to the state Capitol on November 21, Sullivan wrote: “Just made mean comments at gov brownback and told him he sucked, in person #heblowsalot.” The Shawnee Mission East senior said she did not actually talk to Brownback, and the post referenced a joke she had with a student on the trip.

The next day, she was called into high school principal Karl Krawitz’s office. A Brownback staffer had notified the principal, she said.

“My principal told me he needed to do damage control and was really upset,” Sullivan said. “He said I was an embarrassment to the school and the school district and that I had been disrespectful.”

The principal then asked her to write a letter of apology to Brownback and his staff. He set Monday as the due date for the letter.

Sullivan said – “I hope there won’t be any consequences and that my principal and the governor’s office can move on,” she said. “The issue is relevant and, if anything, is a starting point of dialog with the governor about his policies and how our First Amendment rights can be taken away…”

“Moving on” in Brownback’s diminutive mind usually means trying to keep evolution from being taught in high schools.

Did he do enough when his boss, whom he told, did nothing? Should he have done more? Why didn’t his boss and others who may have known do something?

The sexual harassment allegations being made against Herman Cain, exposes a peculiar phenomenon also present in the scandal that has forced Penn State Icon, Joe Paterno to retire. Although both of these men are being accused of despicable behavior, people have rallied to their sides as if they are unfortunate victims.

The revelation that Paterno, an icon in the sport of college football, had knowledge that his former coaching assistant, Jerry Sandusky, was sexually abusing boys should have been devastating to the students at Penn State. These students should have been shocked that their hero did not call police when he learned that a coaching assistant was taking sexual advantage of troubled boys enrolled in a sports program. Instead of lamenting the callous act, the students held a pep rally outside the coach’s house.

It was a disgusting display.

This article makes a comparison between this case and the way the Catholic church handles it’s sexual misconduct cases.

Both would be banned as too scary

From Christians who want to replace Halloween with Jesusween to the dentist who wants to pay kids $1/lb for the Halloween candy they collect (as opposed to the dentist who says they should gorge themselves on candy), there are just too many who want to sanitize childhood.

Children wanting to wear scary, violent or blood-drenched costumes will have to trade them in for more caring and community friendly outfits at two public elementary schools this Halloween.

The principal of Colonel Walker and Ramsay schools said her staff has chosen to use the day normally known for scares and frights as an opportunity to teach community values.

In case you needed further proof of the American education system’s failings, especially in poor and minority communities, consider the latest crime to spread across the country: educational theft. That’s the charge that has landed several parents, such as Ohio’s Kelley Williams-Bolar, in jail this year.

An African-American mother of two, Ms. Williams-Bolar last year used her father’s address to enroll her two daughters in a better public school outside of their neighborhood. After spending nine days behind bars charged with grand theft, the single mother was convicted of two felony counts. Not only did this stain her spotless record, but it threatened her ability to earn the teacher’s license she had been working on.

Ms. Williams-Bolar caught a break last month when Ohio Gov. John Kasich granted her clemency, reducing her charges to misdemeanors from felonies. His decision allows her to pursue her teacher’s license, and it may provide hope to parents beyond the Buckeye State. In the last year, parents in Connecticut, Kentucky and Missouri have all been arrested—and await sentencing—for enrolling their children in better public schools outside of their districts.
[...]
Only in a world where irony is dead could people not marvel at concerned parents being prosecuted for stealing a free public education for their children.

The nerve of these greedy bastards! Just because teachers determine the quality of citizen our country has is no reason to give them things they earned! Cripes!

When students return Thursday for the first day of school across Wisconsin, many familiar faces will be gone, as teachers chose retirement over coming back in the wake of a new law that forces them to pay more for benefits while taking away most of their collective bargaining rights.

Documents obtained by The Associated Press under the state’s open records law show that about twice as many public school teachers decided to hang it up in the first half of this year as in each of the past two full years, part of a mass exit of public employees.

Their departures came before the new law took effect, changes pushed by Gov. Scott Walker and the Republican Legislature that led to weeks of protests at the Capitol.

The ensuing exodus of teachers and other state employees has led to fears that the jobs might not be filled, and that classroom leadership by veteran teachers will be lost.

Good idea to have rules governing day care centers, but who said they were supposed to be indoctrination centers?

The Colorado Department of Human Services has proposed that all day care centres in the state make dolls available that represent three different races.

A lengthy list of new rules – 98 pages to be exact – has just been released by the department which feature a slew of changes.
[...]
Many critics have taken to blogs and forums to voice their disbelief over the three race dolls proposal. Saelic posted: ‘What about disabled dolls, transgender dolls, deformed or elderly dolls? If they really want to include everything why not these?’ Pollysunshine said: ‘Many studies have found in the past that most children always pick up the white doll anyway and rarely notice the different races.’ Paulo84 wrote: ‘Yeah that’s right, instil political correctness or racism in them before then even get to school. So does that mean only the black kids get to play with black dolls and Asian kids Asian dolls etc?’

After Donna Cushlanis’s son kept bursting into tears midway through his second-grade math problems, which one night took over an hour, she told him not to do all of his homework.

“How many times do you have to add seven plus two?” Ms. Cushlanis, 46, said. “I have no problem with doing homework, but that put us both over the edge. I got to the point that this is enough.”

Ms. Cushlanis, a secretary for the Galloway school district, complained to her boss, Annette C. Giaquinto, the superintendent. It turned out that the district, which serves 3,500 kindergarten through eighth-grade students, was already re-evaluating its homework practices. The school board will vote this summer on a proposal to limit weeknight homework to 10 minutes for each year of school — 20 minutes for second graders, and so forth — and ban assignments on weekends, holidays and school vacations.

Galloway, a mostly middle-class community northwest of Atlantic City, is part of a wave of districts across the nation trying to remake homework amid concerns that high-stakes testing and competition for college have fueled a nightly grind that is stressing out children and depriving them of play and rest, yet doing little to raise achievement, particularly in elementary grades.
